Lance Brune was a four-year varsity letterman at SEMO, where he started at quarterback from 1970-73. Brune, at one time during his career, set or tied seven school records. He finished his career with 4,808 passing yards, 4,861 yards of total offense and 30 touchdown passes. Brune also posted game records of 301 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. In addition, he had 77 passing first downs in 1973. His 1,273 passing yards were the most by a freshman in school history. Brune finished the 1973 season ranked eighth in the nation in total offense with 184.7 yards per game. He ranked seventh in the nation with 1,819 passing yards that year, as well. Brune was a First-Team All-Conference, Most Valuable Player of the MIAA and KFVS 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 1973. A year later, he signed as a free agent with the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals. Brune played three games in the preseason with the Cardinals, including the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.
