Brune ranks among Southeast's all-time career leaders in passing yards, pass attempts, passing touchdowns, pass efficiency percentage, average yards per pass, average yards per completion, punting yards and punt attempts. He earned a total of seven varsity letters and was a four-year starting infielder in baseball. Brune was a two-time All-Conference quarterback (1966, 1967), who won his team's Volgelsang and MVP Awards in 1967. He signed a professional contract with the Continental Football League's Chicago Owls as both a quarterback and punter. His football career was interrupted by the Vietnam War in October, 1968. Brune was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart as an Infantry Officer (Advisor) in Vietnam in 1970-71. He was a Southeast Missouri Booster Board member from 1980-83 and that organization's President from 1985-86. Brune was then appointed Southeast's Director of Athletic Development in 1993, a position he held until he retired following the 2010-11 year. All three of his sons (Brent, Brian, Bobby) played football at Southeast.
