McSpadden began achieving success at a high level with Southeast as a left-handed pitcher and four-year letterman in the baseball program. McSpadden remains the only pitcher in school history to lead Southeast in ERA, innings pitched, strikeouts and wins in back-to-back seasons (1973, 1974). Today, he still ranks in nine of the school's single-season and career categories. His 12.14 strikeouts per nine innings led the nation in 1973 and is presently a school record, while his 1.47 ERA in that season ranks fourth. As a senior, McSpadden boasted a 1.53 ERA, marking the fifth-best in school history. He posted 18 victories in his career, which is phenomenal considering during his playing career that the baseball program played only 91 games. That being said, McSpadden tallied the win in 20 percent of Southeast's victories from 1971-74. He was a sixth-round draft pick (121st overall) who played parts of five seasons in the San Diego Padres organization and made two stints with the Padres during big-league spring training. McSpadden is currently the head baseball coach and athletic director at Seward County Community College.
