A starting right-handed pitcher, Pennington garnered Louisville Slugger and Baseball Weekly All-America honors and was a First-Team All-OVC selection at SEMO. He led the NCAA with a stifling 1.33 ERA and ranked nationally in wins (12), strikeouts (121) and hits per nine innings (4.81) in 2001. Pennington ranks among the school's career leaders in ERA (7th, 2.83), shutouts (t2nd, 3) and strikeouts per nine innings (2nd, 10.54). He also holds his place in several single-season categories ranking second in ERA (1.33), wins (12), shutouts (3) and strikeouts (121), and fifth in strikeouts per nine innings (11.46). All of those marks came during the 2001 campaign. Pennington was a 46th-round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians. In seven professional seasons, Pennington won four championship rings and was named to two All-Star teams.
