CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southeast Missouri women's track & field finished first overall (202 points) at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic Saturday at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex on the campus of Southern Illinois. The SEMO men placed second (169.50 points) after Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois (270.5 points).
Kaitlyn Shea won the 5,000 meters in a career-best time of 16:27.27. She now ranks first all-time in SEMO program history for the distance, surpassing Laura Byrne (16:35.00, 1989).
Maddie Keller (18:49.55, fourth) and
Danielle Mohrmann (19:02.49, fifth) also ran in the race for the SEMO women.
Nick Bryant who was named the Ohio Valley Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week on Thursday took first in the 400 meters in 49.08.
Nick South, this week's OVC Male Field Athlete of the Week, won the pole vault 15-9.00 (4.80m) as the SEMO men swept the top three spots in the standings.
Tanner Teigen also propelled himself over the height but on his second attempt to finish as the runner-up.
Jack Rinehart took third with 14-9 (4.50m).
Carli Knott won the 1,500 meters in 4:33.34.
Katie Wegmann finished in a personal-best 4:42.55 (fifth).
Hannah Eastman (4:54.53, eighth),
Taylor Fox (5:06.23, 14th), and
Nia Rivers (5:39.38, 26th) also ran in the distance for the SEMO women.
Kendall Long finished as the runner-up in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.09.
Brock Wood (55.85) and
Dillon Lay (57.51, PR) placed third and fourth in the men's 400 meter hurdles.
Anthony Forrest chipped in a mark of 1:00.83 (seventh).
Terrico Garrett then took third in the men's 1,500 meters, crossing the finish line in 4:02.76.
Austin Perkins (4:10.89, 11th),
Noah Little (4:11.22, 12th),
Clayton Eftink (4:12.79, 17th) and
Kory Snyder (4:22.25, 19th) rounded out the Redhawk men's competitors in the race.
Wegmann took third in the 800 meters, crossing the finish with a career-best time of 2:16.59.
Brianna Payton finished right on her heels in 2:16.59 for fourth.
Claire Morrill (2:20.29),
Tayler Gudde (2:20.63) and
Hannah Eastman (2:26.74) also ran in the distance for the SEMO women.
Garrett added a time of 1:56.48 for fourth in the men's 800 meters.
Griffin Bailey (2:04.52, 14th), Snyder (2:05.86, 15th) and Perkins (2:06.89, 16th) also ran for SEMO and finished in consecutive order.
Kristen Carter placed sixth in the women's 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.90.
Anthony Forrest led the SEMO men in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.09.
Dillon Lay (15.27, PR) and
Brock Wood (15.45) finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Readnour added a finish of 16.32 (11th).
Breanna Miles finished the 400 meters in 58.89 (seventh).
She also led a trio of women in the 200 meters with a time of 24.70 for fourth. Cogio (25.95, eighth) and Carter (27.04, 13th) also ran in the event for the Redhawks.
Nick Bryant posted a mark of 22.35 in the men's 200 meters for eighth.
In the 100 meters,
Sandrea Cogio was clocked at 12.69.
Aaron Modrow placed fifth in the 5,000 meters, completing the race in 15:22.89 to pace the SEMO men.
Schuyler Ogden (15:45.12, 10th, PR),
Seth Gleason (15:48.63, 11th) and
Thomas Doss (15:59.24, 13th) also ran in the distance for SEMO.
The SEMO women's 4x400 meter relay team of Long, Wegmann, Payton and Morrill took second in 4:02.79. The other Redhawks women's team of James, Gudde, Knott and Cogio finished in 4:11.70 (fifth).
The SEMO men had three teams compete in the relay. Wood, Garrett, Perkins and Bailey placed third in 3:25.86. The other two SEMO relay team finished in 3:34.56 (sixth, Readnour, Bissell, Forrest and Lay) and 3:37.97 (eighth, Splitt, Little, Sowerby and Falco).
Katie Schumer led the SEMO women with a height of 11-5.75 (3.50m) for fourth in pole vault.
In the men's javelin, SEMO captured five of the top six slots paced by
Justin Breault. Breault won the event with 195-10 (59.70m) followed by
Josiah Kilgore with 163-3 (49.75m) to secure second.
Josh Kile (148-1, 45.15m),
Jon Bissell (144-10, 44.15m) and
Isaac Readnour (138-6, 42.23m) finished fourth through sixth.
Tayler Gudde paced the women with a javelin distance of 115-4 (35.15m) for fourth and
Kaylee Johnston was fifth (107-6, 32.77m).
Dylan Clark posted a shot put mark of 49-4.25 (15.04m) for fifth at the Classic.
Clay Alewelt concluded the competition with a feat of 45-6.25 (13.87m, eighth) and Readnour added a throw of 29-0.50 (8.85m, 15th).
Clark also had a personal-best hammer throw mark of 187-6 (57.14m) for third. Alewelt finished eighth (155-2, 47.31m).
Anya Tonga led the SEMO women in shot put with a mark of 46-4.75 (14.14m) to secure third.
Nicole Humphreys registered a hurl of 39-9.75 (12.13m, sixth) and
Makenzie Williams finished with 37-0.50 (11.29m, 10th).
Humphreys then had the top Redhawk women's finish in hammer with a personal-best 171-8 (52.32m, sixth). Tonga completed the competition with 153-7 (46.81m, ninth) and
Makenzie Williams was right behind her on the leaderboard with 152-11 (46.62m).
South led the men in the long jump with a distance of 20-11.25 (6.38m) for third. Rinehart (19-0.75, 5.81m, seventh) and Bissell (18-7, 5.66m, ninth) also represented the Redhawks in the event.
Lauryn James compiled a long jump of 18-8.50 (5.70m) to take second in the event after a jump off.
Ciara Potter was fifth (17-9, 5.41m) and
Serena Williams finished sixth (17-2.75, 5.25m). Schumer added a jump of 14-5.25 (4.40m, 18th).
Donald Hatfield Jackson overcame a height of 6-4.75 (1.95) in his first attempt for fourth in the high jump.
Tallyn Brazell cleared the same mark on his second try for fifth.
Serena Williams took fourth in the women's high jump, besting 5-3 (1.60m). Potter (4-11, 1.50m, eighth) and
Ellie Gamradt (4-9, 1.45m, ninth) also competed in the event for SEMO.
Jane Boessen finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a career-best 11:50.95. On the men's side,
Byron Sowerby was the runner-up, crossing the finish in 10:03.68.
Justin Splitt was third (10:12.12) and
Trevor Falco was fifth (10:59.77).
On Friday, Clark finished second overall in the discus with a career-best distance of 155-4 (47.35m). Alewelt added a mark of 140-7 (42.84m, eighth) and Readnour finished with 90-3 (27.50m, 15th).
Makenzie Williams led the women in discus with a feat of 146-10 (44.75m) to take third. Tonga chipped in a throw of 140-9 (42.90m, seventh) and Humphreys hurled the discus 133-7 (40.72m, eighth).
Readnour also finished fourth in the triple jump with 44-4.25 (13.52m).
Leslie Brooks tallied a jump of 37-7.75 (11.47m) for third in the women's competition.
SEMO will next continue its 2021 outdoor season at the Ole Miss Invite in Oxford, Mississippi, March 27-28. Friday field events will start at 3 p.m. with the men's hammer throw. Saturday field events are set for 9 a.m. with running events following at 1 p.m.
