Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Southeast Missouri (5-7) split a doubleheader against Miami (OH) (8-3) on Saturday at Capaha Field, winning the first game 10-2 before falling in the second game 14-6. In the opener, the Redhawks showcased a powerful offense, tallying 12 hits, including two home runs, while limiting Miami to seven hits and one home run.

The Redhawks opened the scoring in Game 1 with Cal Sullivan doubling to left center and later scoring on a double by Dakota Joggerst in the bottom of the first inning, giving the home team a 1-0 lead after one inning. Miami (OH) managed to score in the second inning when Marc Dierks, after being hit by a pitch, advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Southeast responded strongly, starting with a triple by Tank Sims, followed by Carson Schrack driving in Sims with a double. A groundout by Demitri Shakotko brought Schrack home, and Caleb Klein capped the inning with a solo home run to left field, leading 4-1 after two innings.

In the fifth inning, the Redhawks extended their lead when Joe Hall singled and was driven home by Joggerst's single. With the bases loaded, Sims walked to score another run, and Logan Yule's single through the right side brought in two more runs, increasing the lead to 7-1. Although Miami added a run in the sixth with a solo homer by Evan Appelwick, Southeast Missouri answered with a solo home run from Hall, maintaining an 8-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Redhawks added two more runs when Ryan Lopetegui, pinch hitting for Shakotko, doubled to right field, driving in Sims and Brooks Kettering, securing the victory with a final score of 10-2.
