Redhawks Women Capture 2021 OVC Outdoor Track & Field Championship While Men Finish Second Saturday

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Southeast Missouri women's track & field captured the 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship Saturday at O'Brien Field with 148 total points. The SEMO men finished second overall with 172 points behind host Eastern Illinois who totaled 197.5.
 
The outdoor Championship is the 10th in program history for the SEMO women and first title since 2014.
 
Kaitlyn Shea was named the OVC Women's Track Athlete of the Year and Donald Hatfield Jackson was awarded OVC Men's Athlete of the Championship at the conclusion of the meet.
 
Head coach Eric Crumpecker was tabbed the OVC Women's Coach of the Year. It marked his first career honor on the women's outdoor side and the ninth OVC Women's Coach of the Year for SEMO.

The SEMO women won four Gold medals in the final day of the Championship.  
 
Carli Knott successfully defended her 1,500 meters Championship, taking Gold Saturday in 4:27.07. Knott had previously also won the event at the 2019 OVC Championship in Cape Girardeau.
 
Shea finished third for Bronze with a time of 4:33.11. Brianna Payton tallied a finish of 4:52.39 (10th) and Taylor Fox followed in 5:11.01 (12th).
 
Shea then won Gold in the 5,000 meters, her second of the 2021 Championship and third medal of the weekend. Shea captured first in the second of two heats in 17:00.60 and crossed the finish line 19 seconds ahead of Eastern Kentucky's Jeanne Charat Reix, the 2021 OVC Silver Medalist.
 
Knott won the opening heat in 17:37.32 for fourth overall in the race. Shea and Knott's finishes in the 5,000 meters solidified the Championship with a 15-point SEMO swing in the event.
 
Danielle Mohrmann finished the 5,000 meters in 19:23.87 (28th).
 
Katie Wegmann and Knott combined for a top-two finish in the 800 meters. Wegmann and Knott secured Gold and Silver, respectively, making their decisive moves in the final 100 meters of the race. Wegmann won the event in 2:12.38 and Knott followed in 2:12.48 for her second medal of the day.
 
Wegmann is the first SEMO runner to win the 800 meters Championship since Brooke Woodruff in 2004.
 
Claire Morrill was clocked at 2:14.17 for sixth as three Redhawks scored in the 800 meters.
 
Kendall Long took first in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.98 for Gold. Brock Wood was fourth (53.22). Long is the first SEMO athlete to win the OVC 400-meter hurdles Championship since Miya Dorsey in 2017.
 
Dillon Lay finished the 400-meter hurdles in 58.26 (eighth), scoring on the men's side.
 
Serena Williams finished third overall in the triple jump to garner Bronze. Williams compiled a jump of 39-5.75 (12.03m) on her second try. Ciara Potter also scored for the Redhawks with a mark of 36-11 (11.25m, seventh) and Leslie Brooks registered a feat of 35-0.50 (10.68m, 13th).
 
Jaden Kight secured Bronze in the javelin. The Whitewater, Missouri native, registered a personal-best throw of 136-9 (41.68m) in her fourth attempt for third overall in the field event.
 
Tayler Gudde added a javelin mark of 99-6 (30.33m, 14th).
 
Nicole Humphreys tallied a personal-best shot put mark of 44-3.25 (13.49m) for fifth overall Saturday. Makenzie Williams added a throw of 35-1.75 (10.71m, 13th).
 
Kristen Carter crossed the finish of the women's 100-meter hurdles in 14.50 (seventh) to score for the Redhawks.

Serena Williams posted a time of 12.10 (eighth) in the 100 meters to add to the SEMO women's total. Lay was fifth in the men's race in 10.85 (four points).
 
In the 400 meters, Breanna Miles earned two points for SEMO with a time of 55.82 (seventh).
 
The SEMO women's 4x100 meter relay team of Lauryn James, Serena Williams, Sandrea Cogio and Breanna Miles finished fourth in 46.30.
 
In the final women's event of the day, the SEMO women's 4x400 meter relay team of Miles, Long, James and Morrill finished in 3:53.64 for fourth.
 
Nick Bryant, the 2020 OVC Male Freshman of the Year, won the 400 meters at his second-straight OVC Championship (2021 Outdoors and 2020 Indoors) Saturday in 47.65. Bryant qualified first overall for the event in the prelims before grabbing the Championship.
 
Bryant, a Memphis, Tennessee native, is the first SEMO 400 meters Gold Medalist since Jarred Pasley in 2016.
 
Colin Schwab was clocked at 49.72 (eighth) to score for the Redhawks.
 
Justin Breault captured Gold in the men's javelin with a heave of 190-3 (57.99m) on his second of five attempts. Josiah Kilgore grabbed Bronze with a throw of 186-0 (56.70m) in his final try.
 
Shea DeGraaf, the 2021 OVC Decathlon Champion, also scored for SEMO in the javelin with a feat of 167-1 (50.93m). Josh Kile finished with a distance of 150-8 (45.92m, ninth).
 
In the men's 800 meters, Terrico Garrett captured Silver, crossing the finish in 1:52.92. Griffin Bailey was clocked at 2:04.57 for eighth.
 
Hatfield Jackson won his third medal of the Championship Saturday afternoon. Hatfield Jackson, the 2021 OVC high jump and long jump Gold medalist, grabbed Silver in the men's triple jump. Hatfield Jackson posted a personal-best feat of 48-9.50 (14.87m) for second overall.
 
Victor Mathuthu (46-2.5, 14.08m) and Isaac Readnour (46-0.75, 14.04m) also scored for the Redhawks in the triple jump, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively.
 
Dylan Clark also grabbed his third medal of the three-day Championship Saturday in the shot put. Clark, the 2021 OVC hammer Gold medalist and discus Silver medalist, secured his second Silver medal of the meet with a personal-best shot put mark of 54-2 (16.51m).
 
Clay Alewelt chipped in a shot put distance of 49-4.25 (15.04m) for eighth to add to the SEMO total.
 
Anthony Forrest, the freshman from Big Bear City, California, finished the 110-meter hurdles in 14.68 for Bronze. DeGraaf compiled a time of 15.08 (eighth) to add to the Redhawks men's total.
 
The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Bryant, Garrett, Wood and Perkins earned Bronze, crossing the finish in 3:18.36 to conclude the Championship.
 
Bryant was fourth overall in the 200 meters with a time of 21.67.
 
Noah Little concluded the 1,500 meters in 4:08.72 for 12th.
 
Seth Gleason (15:48.10, 17th), Clayton Eftink (16:08.78, 20th) and Schuyler Ogden (16:20.27, 21st) represented the Redhawks in the 5,000 meters.
 
The Redhawks men's 4x100 meter squad of Colin Schwab, Brock Wood, Dillon Lay and Victor Mathuthu completed the relay in 42.49 for sixth.
 
On the women's side, Belmont came in second with 127 points while Murray State came in third with 121 points. Eastern Illinois placed fourth with 112.5 points followed by Eastern Kentucky (100), Austin Peay (60), Tennessee Tech (41), Jacksonville State (34.5), Tennessee State (19), SIUE (15) and Morehead State (7).
 
The Eastern Illinois men won the team title with 197.5 points. Belmont came in third with 138 points, Tennessee State finished fourth with 94 points followed by Eastern Kentucky (57.5), SIUE (54), UT Martin (49) and Morehead State (14).
