Series History
Thursday marks the 71st meeting between Southeast Missouri and UT Martin, schools that reside less than two hours apart. SEMO goes for the sweep of UTM this season after coming from behind to beat the Skyhawks, 74-69, in overtime on Jan. 5. With a win Thursday, the Redhawks will complete their first sweep of UTM in a season 2012-13.
Looking Ahead
After Thursday's game, the Redhawks travel to Eastern Illinois (Feb. 16), Austin Peay (Feb. 21) and Murray State (Feb. 23) to close out the road portion of their schedule. Southeast Missouri's current four-game road stretch is its longest this year.
OVC Update
Southeast Missouri and UT Martin enter the week tied for 10th in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with identical 3-9 league marks. Belmont (10-2), Murray State (10-2) and Austin Peay (10-2) are locked in a first-place tie with Jacksonville State (9-3) close behind. The final five teams on the Redhawks conference schedule are ahead of them in the standings. Â
McGlothan Named OVC Co-Freshman of the Week
Southeast Missouri freshman forward Gabe McGlothan was named Ohio Valley Conference Co-Freshman of the Week on Feb. 11. A native of Gilbert, Arizona, McGlothan had a huge week posting a double-double in back-to-back starts. He scored a season-high 27 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and made a jumper with two seconds left to send the game to overtime against Tennessee Tech (Feb. 7). McGlothan threw down a monsterous dunk with 48 seconds left in overtime to send SEMO to victory. Two days later, he scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds against Jacksonville State (Feb. 9) for his team-high third double-double of the season. For the week, McGlothan shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the field, knocked down three 3-pointers and made 5-of-6 free throws (83.3 percent). He posted double-digit rebounds in four of his six OVC starts. Belmont's Dylan Windler (Player of the Week), UT Martin's Quintin Dove (Newcomer of the Week) and Eastern Kentucky's Jomaru Brown (Co-Freshman of the Week) rounded out the honorees.
Mr. Double-Double
Freshman Gabe McGlothan recorded a double-double in back-to-back games when he finished with 27 points and 16 rebounds vs. Tennessee Tech (Feb. 7) and 13 points and 10 boards against Jacksonville State (Feb. 9). McGlothan, who has a team-high three double-doubles this season, became the first Redhawk to get a double-double in back-to-back games since Antonius Cleveland accomplished the feat vs. Belmont (13 pts., 11 reb.) and Tennessee State (21 pts., 10 reb.) in 2015-16.
While on the Topic
If Gabe McGlothan turns in a double-double against UT Martin Thursday, he will become the first Southeast Missouri player to get a double-double in three-straight games since 2014-15. Nino Johnson was the last Redhawk to get that done with 10 points and 10 rebounds vs. Eastern Illinois, 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. UT Martin and 25 points and 12 boards vs. Murray State that year.
Approaching 300 Assists
Point guard Jonathan Dalton is just five assists away from reaching 300 in his career. Dalton enters Thursday's game with 395 career assists and a team-high 86 dishes this season. Dalton presently ranks fifth all-time in career assists at Southeast Missouri.
Rebounding Machine
For the fourth time in six games, Gabe McGlothan reached double figures in the rebound column when he grabbed 10 vs. Jacksonville State (Feb. 9). McGlothan leads the team and ranks 11th in the Ohio Valley Conference with 6.1 rebounds per game.
On the Road
The Redhawks are 1-10 in true road games and 3-10 overall outside of Cape Girardeau this season. Southeast Missouri is looking to end a seven-game losing streak on the road. The Redhawks are 0-5 in away games during league play and last won on the road at Mississippi Valley State (77-57) on Dec. 4.Â
New Lineup
Southeast Missouri started three freshmen for the first time this season when Nygal Russell, Gabe McGlothan and Sage Tolbert joined Ledarrius Brewer and Jonathan Dalton in the starting five vs. Tennessee Tech (Feb. 7). It was the seventh different starting lineup combination for the Redhawks. Russell (10 pts.) and McGlothan (27 pts, 16 reb.) each scored double figures against the Golden Eagles. Russell, McGlothan, Tolbert, Dalton and Brewer started each of the last two contests.
Eighteen and Counting
Guard Ledarrius Brewer scored double figures for the 18th time this season when he dropped in 11 points vs. Jacksonville State (Feb. 9). Brewer's 18 double-digit scoring games are most on the team. He has scored double figures a total of 40 times in his career.
McGlothan Rises in Starting Role
Since joining the starting lineup vs. SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 24), freshman Gabe McGlothan has scored double figures three times and pulled down double-digit rebounds in four of six starts. McGlothan also has three double-doubles in that span. He shot 31-of-62 (.500) from the field, knocked down five 3-pointers and scored over 20 points once during that stretch, as well.
Draining 3s
The Redhawks matched a season-high 14 three-pointers at Florida State (Dec. 17). Southeast Missouri shot 14-of-37 behind the arc with seven treys in each half. SEMO made 11 or more 3-pointers in nine contests. The Redhawks are averaging 8.4 three-point field goals made per game.
More from the Arc
Southeast Missouri ranks fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference in 3-pointers made through 25 games this season. The Redhawks drained 209 three-pointers in 599 attempts.Â
Defending the Three
The Redhawks rank second in the Ohio Valley Conference and 39th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage defense. Opponents are shooting 30.7 percent from beyond the arc against Southeast Missouri this year. Murray State leads the OVC with a .283 three-point field goal percentage defense.
About UT Martin
UT Martin won three of its last five games and carries a two-game winning streak into Thursday's matchup. The Skyhawks knocked off Jacksonville State (Feb. 7) and throttled Tennessee Tech (Feb. 9) last week. UTM has five players scoring in double figures with Quintin Dove leading the way with 13 points a game. The Skyhawks are the Ohio Valley Conference's second-best free throw shooting team with a .732 (278-of-380) clip. UTM is also second in the conference in offensive rebounds (12.4 per game). Opposing teams are shooting 48.2 percent against the Skyhawks from 3-point range this year.
