Rick Ray faces as a head coach.
Redhawks Lead OVC in 3-Point FG DefenseThe Redhawks lead the Ohio Valley Conference in 3-point field goal percentage defense. Opponents are shooting just 28.3 percent (45-of-159) from beyond the arc against Southeast. The Redhawks are also 31st in the nation in that category.
Back in CapeSoutheast opens a two-game homestand against Bowling Green Tuesday. The Redhawks are at home for just the second time this season after playing six of their first seven contests on the road. Southeast dropped its home-opener to Loyola Marymount by a score of 73-60 on Nov. 28.
Coming UpOle Miss is the first Southeastern Conference opponent to play in the Show Me Center when they come to Cape Girardeau on Dec. 12. Southeast and Ole Miss hook up in a nationally televised American Sports Network matchup. The Redhawks are the first OVC school to host an SEC opponent since Dec. 22, 1993. That year, Murray State hosted Ole Miss.
Wallace Nets Season-HighSophomore
Marcus Wallace had a season-high 16 points and grabbed five rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench at Memphis (Dec. 5). Wallace shot 6-of-8 from the field and knocked down two 3-pointers en route to his third double-digit scoring game this season. He leads the Redhawks with 24 assists and ranks fourth on the team in scoring with 8.1 points per contest.
Double-Digit ScorersThree Southeast players scored double figures in a game for the third time this season during the Redhawks recent 80-65 loss at Memphis (Dec. 5).
Marcus Wallace paved the way with 16 points, while
Antonius Cleveland and
Trey Kellum followed with 14 and 12, respectively. Southeast has had multiple double-digit scorers a total of four times this year.
Positive StridesSoutheast hung tough with Memphis until the final five minutes of its 80-65 road loss on Dec. 5. The Tigers used a 12-1 run to pull away for good down the stretch. Southeast was within three points when
Antonius Cleveland's dunk made it a 58-55 game with 6:50 remaining. Memphis later led by as many as 17 points before closing out the win. The Redhawks improved at the free throw line, sinking 10 of their first 11 of the game. Southeast .667 (14-of-21) free throw percentage was a season-best.
Cleveland Clears 700 PointsJunior guard
Antonius Cleveland went over 700 points in his career when he returned home to face Memphis at the FedExForum on Dec. 5. Cleveland scored 14 points on 5-of-13 field goals and 4-of-7 free throws. He also had six rebounds in 28 minutes. He scored double figures for the fifth time in seven starts this season and now has 701 points and a 10.1 points per game average in his Southeast career.
Close at HalftimeSoutheast was behind by just two points at halftime for the third time this season when it trailed Memphis, 37-35, on Dec. 5. The Redhawks were also down, 28-26, at Alabama A&M (Nov. 19) and, 33-31, vs. Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28). The Redhawks have won only one half of basketball through seven games this season when they led Texas Rio Grande Valley, 42-36, at the half on Nov. 24.
Second Half SlideThe Redhawks trailed by five or less points at halftime in four of their last five games and were outscored by double figures in the second half during five-straight contests. Alabama A&M (46-30), Texas Rio Grande Valley (47-32), Loyola Marymount (40-29), Southern Illinois (42-23) and Memphis (43-30) outlasted Southeast by double-digits in the second half during that stretch.
Hard Non-Conference ScheduleThe Redhawks have had a brutal non-conference schedule thus far featuring road matchups with Preseason Atlantic 10 favorite Dayton (Nov. 13) and Evansville (Nov. 15), which was picked second in this year's Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll. Southeast also made trips to Alabama A&M (Nov. 19), Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24) regional rival Southern Illinois (Dec. 2) and Memphis (Dec. 5), and hosted Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28). Combined, those teams own a record of 37-14 with four of the Redhawks seven foes (SIU, UE, Dayton, AAMU) sitting with one loss this year. It doesn't get any easier for Southeast which hosts Bowling Green (6-2) and Ole Miss (6-2) this week.
Last Time Against Bowling GreenBowling Green scored eight points in the final 1:53 to hang on for a 62-54 victory over Southeast in Ohio on Nov. 25, 2014. BGSU scored all of those points at the free throw line to pull away.
