Series HistorySoutheast and Memphis square off for the sixth time in 2015-16. The Redhawks are 2-3 all-time against the Tigers. Southeast is 0-2 against Memphis at the FedExForum with losses to the Tigers there in 2009-10 (87-57, on Dec. 22) and 2013-14 (77-65, on Dec. 21). Saturday marks the first time head coach
Rick Ray faces Memphis.
Did You Say 700th?Saturday's matchup with Memphis marks Southeast's 700th game as a NCAA Division I program. The Redhawks first moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1991-92. They are currently 292-407 (.418) with eight winning seasons, one Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title, one OVC Tournament crown and one NCAA Tournament appearance at the Division I level.
Road HeavyThe Redhawks play on the road for the sixth time in seven games when they head to Memphis. Southeast and Belmont have played on the road more than any other teams in the Ohio Valley Conference this season with a combined 13 away contests between the two.
Speaking of Away GamesThe Redhawks have lost nine-straight games outside of Cape Girardeau. Southeast lost three Ohio Valley Conference road games and an OVC Tournament matchup with Morehead State in 2014-15 before starting this year at 0-5 away from home. Southeast's last road win was a 70-64 victory at Austin Peay on
Jan. 31, 2015.
Mileage CheckSoutheast spent five of its first six games of the 2015-16 season on the road, travelling over 3,600 miles between stops at Dayton, Ohio, Evansville, Indiana, Huntsville, Alabama, Edinburg, Texas and Carbondale, Illinois. The Redhawks logged a total of 1,789 miles by charter bus alone. Southeast will add 344 more miles to that total when it travels to Memphis this weekend.
Hard Non-Conference ScheduleThe Redhawks have had a brutal non-conference schedule thus far featuring road matchups with Preseason Atlantic 10 favorite Dayton (Nov. 13) and Evansville (Nov. 15), which was picked second in this year's Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll. Southeast also made trips to Alabama A&M (Nov. 19), Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24) and regional rival Southern Illinois (Dec. 2), and hosted Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28) in its only home game. Combined, those teams own a record of 27-12 with four of the Redhawks six foes (SIU, UE, Dayton, AAMU) sitting with just one loss this year. It doesn't get any easier for Southeast which hosts Bowling Green (5-2) on Dec. 8 and Ole Miss (5-2) on Dec. 12 after it visits Memphis.
Angus Will PlayForward
Joel Angus III will play against Memphis after he sustained a cut in his non-shooting hand early in the second half at Southern Illinois (Dec. 2). Angus' cut required stitches and limited him to only three minutes in the second stanza. Angus is Southeast's third-leading scorer (9.3 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (6.0 rpg) through six starts in his first year as a Redhawk. He is one of two players who started all six games.
Another Starting LineupIt's been difficult for the Redhawks to establish any type of flow this season. Southeast has used five different starting lineups in six games, with
Eric McGill,
Isiah Jones,
Antonius Cleveland,
Joel Angus III and
Trey Kellum becoming the latest combination to take the court at Southern Illinois (Dec. 2). The other four lineups consisted of
Marcus Wallace, Jones, Cleveland, Angus and Kellum vs. Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28);
Robby Dosier, Kellum, Jones, Angus and
J.T. Jones at Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24); Cleveland, Angus and
Tony Anderson at Dayton (Nov. 13); and
Eric McGill, Jones, Cleveland, Angus and
J.T. Jones at Evansville (Nov. 15) and Alabama A&M (Nov. 19).
Memphis RootsSoutheast has three players from Memphis, who will return home to face the Tigers in the FedExForum Saturday. Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference guard
Antonius Cleveland, freshman guard
Eric McGill and guard/forward
Ladarius Coleman are the Memphis natives. Cleveland makes his second career start at Memphis after scoring 14 points the last time the Redhawks were at the FedExForum on Dec. 21, 2013. In all, there are eight players from Memphis between the Redhawks and Tigers who will suit up for Saturday's contest.
700 is NextAntonius Cleveland is 13 points away from reaching 700 in his career at Southeast. Cleveland boasts a 10.1 points per game average in 68 games and 56 starts during his career. He also has 36 double-digit scoring games, two double figure rebound performances, two 20+ point games and two double-doubles in his college career.
Last Time OutThe Redhawks limited Southern Illinois to 2-of-15 from 3-point range in the first half during a 74-50 road loss on Dec. 2. Southeast trailed by five at halftime and kept it close for five minutes in the second half before falling apart. The Redhawks shot just 34.5 percent (19-of-55) from the field and 20 percent (3-of-15) from beyond the arc. The loss was Southeast's second by 20 or more points this season.
Coleman Reaches Career-HighLadarius Coleman became the seventh Redhawk to score double figures in a game this season when he dropped in a career-high 10 points to lead all Southeast scorers at Southern Illinois (Dec. 2). Coleman scored four of his points at the free throw line on a pefect 4-of-4 attempts in 29 minutes off the bench. He is also Southeast's only player with double-digit rebounds in a game this year.
Tough StartThe Redhawks are 0-6 this season and looking to snap a seven-game losing streak dating back to last year. Southeast is winless through its first six games of a season for the first time since 2010-11. That year, the Redhawks went 0-10 and did not get their first win until Dec. 11 (101-52 vs. Hannibal-LaGrange). Southeast is currently one of 11 NCAA Division I teams without a victory this season. The others are Alcorn State (0-6), Central Connecticut State (0-6), Delaware State (0-7), Drexel (0-6), Lehigh (0-7), Southern Utah (0-5), Mississippi Valley State (0-8), Prairie View A&M (0-7), Southern Mississippi (0-5) and Marshall (0-4).
Points in the PaintThe Redhawks have been outscored in the paint five times this season. Opponents presently hold a hefty 212-160 (+52) advantage in that category. Southeast's last three foes averaged 35.3 points on their paint touches. Southern Illinois posted a season-high 48 points in the paint against the Redhawks on Dec. 2.
On the ReboundThe Redhawks outrebounded their opponent for the third time in four games they held a 42-37 advantage vs. Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28). Southeast averaged 42 boards per game and had a total of 47 offensive rebounds in those contests. The Redhawks pulled down a season-high 17 offensive rebounds against Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24) and rank fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference with 12.5 offensive rebounds per game.
Free Throw WoesThe Redhawks have shot under 50 percent at the free throw line in four of their six games this season. Southeast is currently 12th in the Ohio Valley Conference and 346th in the nation with a .516 clip (64-of-124).
How About From Three?Southeast made a season-high seven 3-pointers at Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24). The Redhawks have a total of 26 threes, fewest in the Ohio Valley Conference. Southeast is 26-of-107 (.243) from 3-point range.
Isiah Jones has a team-high seven 3-pointers made this year.
Up NextSoutheast returns to Cape Girardeau to host Mid-American Conference member Bowling Green on Tuesday, Dec. 8. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center.
