Merry ChristmasSoutheast closes out its two-game road swing before the Christmas holiday in Springfield, Missouri this week. The Redhawks then host Harris-Stowe in their final tune-up before Ohio Valley Conference play on Dec. 27. Southeast won a game right before Christmas in four of the last five years and played on the exact Dec. 22 date three times during that span. The Redhawks lost at Ole Miss (51-81, Dec. 22, 2014), defeated IUPUI (83-79 OT, Dec. 23, 2013) and won at UMKC (65-60, Dec. 22, 2012), Sacramento State (77-76, Dec. 22, 2011) and Tennessee Tech (77-75, Dec. 21, 2010). Series HistoryTuesday marks the 145th meeting between state rivals Southeast and Missouri State. MSU leads the all-time series by a count of 90-54. The series rates as the Redhawks second-longest in program history. Southeast has played only Central Missouri (155 games) more than the Bears. The Redhawks lost to MSU in four-straight trips to Springfield and haven't won there since Feb. 21, 1981 (73-68). Southeast has dropped five of the last seven meetings between these teams.
Something in CommonSoutheast head coach
Rick Ray (2006-10) and Missouri State head coach Paul Lusk (2004-11) were assistant coaches on Matt Painter's staff at Purdue. The Boilermakers were a combined 103-37 (.736) with four NCAA Tournament appearances when Ray and Lusk worked together as assistants at Purdue.
Road HeavyThe Redhawks played on the road for the seventh time when they visited Northern Kentucky on Dec. 19. Southeast has lost 11-straight games outside of Cape Girardeau. The Redhawks dropped three Ohio Valley Conference road games and an OVC Tournament matchup with Morehead State in 2014-15 before starting this year 0-7 away from home. Southeast's last road win was a 70-64 victory at Austin Peay on Jan. 31, 2015.
Mileage CheckSoutheast travelled over 4,800 miles between stops at Dayton, Ohio, Evansville, Indiana, Huntsville, Alabama, Edinburg, Texas, Carbondale, Illinois, Memphis, Tennessee, Highland Heights, Kentucky and Springfield, Missouri. The Redhawks logged a total of 3,081 miles by charter bus alone.
Rugged StartThe Redhawks are 0-10 this season and looking to snap an 11-game losing streak dating back to last year. Southeast is winless through its first 10 games of a season for the first time since 2010-11. That year, the Redhawks went 0-10 and did not get their first win until Dec. 11 (101-52 vs. Hannibal-LaGrange). Southeast is currently one of four NCAA Division I teams without a victory this season. The others are Delaware State (0-11), Mississippi Valley State (0-13) and Prairie View A&M (0-10).
Looking for a WinSoutheast is on a double-digit game losing streak for the fifth time in its NCAA Division I era. The Redhawks 11-game losing streak is the fourth-longest in the program's Division I history. Southeast has never started a season winless in its first 11 games. Here are the Redhawks double-digit game losing streaks:
21 games -- 2008-09 (last 19), 2009-10 (first 2)
18 games -- 2009-10 (last 8), 2010-11 (first 10)
12 games -- 2005-06
11 games -- 2014-15 (last 1), 2015-16 (first 10)
10 games -- 2007-08 (last 8), 2008-09 (first 2)
Against the Missouri Valley ConferenceMissouri State is the third Missouri Valley Conference team Southeast faces this season. The Redhawks are currently 0-2 in such games and have lost three in a row to MVC schools. Southeast fell to both Evansville (80-65, Nov. 15) and Southern Illinois (74-50, Dec. 2) on the road this year. Southeast is 106-187 all-time against the MVC. That record includes a 45-70 mark against SIU, 0-1 record vs. Drake, 4-9 record vs. Evansville, 2-8 mark vs. Bradley, 1-7 record vs. Illinois State, 0-2 record vs. Indiana State and a 54-90 mark vs. Missouri State.
Familiar with the MVCRick Ray's first NCAA Division I coaching job was at Indiana State. Ray was an assistant coach there from 1997-2004, helping ISU to consecutive 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances in 1999-2000 and 2000-01. In 1999-2000, the Sycamores compiled a 14-4 record in the Missouri Valley Conference and won the regular-season title. ISU then won the MVC Tournament the following season. The Sycamores upset No. 4 seed Oklahoma in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. In addition, Ray was part of the ISU staff that defeated perennial power Indiana in back-to-back seasons.
Jones Gets First 20-Point GameIsiah Jones recorded his first 20-point game of the season and third in his career when he matched a career-high 21 at Northern Kentucky (Dec. 19). Jones shot 7-of-12 from the field, knocked down three 3-pointers and made 4-of-6 free throws in 32 minutes. He is the third different player to score over 20 points in a game for the Redhawks this year. Jones has scored double figures and buried multiple 3-pointers in three-straight starts.
Stealin' the ShowFreshman guard
Eric McGill collected a season-high four steals in his last start at Northern Kentucky (Dec. 19). McGill, who leads Southeast and ranks fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference with 1.4 per game, has had two or more steals in three of his last four games.
Redhawk RewindSoutheast suffered its 10th loss this season with a 79-69 setback at Horizon League member Northern Kentucky (Dec. 19).
Isiah Jones tied a career-high 21 points, while
Joel Angus III and
Antonius Cleveland followed with 16 and 13, respectively. NKU shot 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from the field and made eight 3-pointers, including six in the first half to key the win. The Redhawks took their only lead of the contest on
Joel Angus III's layup just 43 seconds in.
Closing InAntonius Cleveland is six rebounds away from 300 and 19 steals away from 100 in his Southeast career. Cleveland has 294 rebounds for a 4.1 boards per game average and 81 steals for a 1.1 per game average in three years as a Redhawk.
Season-High Field Goal PercentageThe Redhawks shot a season-best 48.3 percent from the field at Northern Kentucky (Dec. 19). It was the fifth time Southeast shot over 40 percent this year. The Redhawks made 28-of-58 shots and posted a 51.9 percent (14-of-27) clip in the first half, their highest first-half field goal percentage.
Hard Non-Conference ScheduleThe Redhawks have had a tough non-conference schedule thus far featuring road matchups with Preseason Atlantic 10 favorite Dayton (Nov. 13) and Evansville (Nov. 15), which was picked second in this year's Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll. Southeast also made trips to Alabama A&M (Nov. 19), Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24) regional rival Southern Illinois (Dec. 2), Memphis (Dec. 5) and Northern Kentucky (Dec. 19), and hosted Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28), Bowling Green (Dec. 8) and Ole Miss (Dec. 12).
