Final ExamsSoutheast spent the week taking final exams and is back in action to face Northern Kentucky Saturday. The Redhawks have two more games before the Christmas holiday. Southeast also plays at Missouri Valley Conference foe Missouri State on Dec. 22. Â
Series HistoryThis year marks the second meeting between Southeast and Northern Kentucky. The Redhawks own a slight 1-0 series edge after beating the Norse, 79-65, at the Cure UCD Classic in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. That game was played on Nov. 29, 2013. Southeast won the Cure UCD Classic with wins over Northern Kentucky, Tulane and Texas State.
We Meet AgainA total of 10 players that played in the last game between Southeast and Northern Kentucky are back for this year's matchup.
Antonius Cleveland and
Jamaal Calvin set to face NKU for the second time in their Southeast careers. Meanwhile, Jalen Billups, Tyler White, Cole Murray, Jake Giesler, Todd Johnson, Dean Danos, Matt Rosenwinkel and Deontae Cole all saw action against the Redhawks in 2013-14. White led the Norse with 21 points in that game.
Cleveland Nets Career-HighAntonius Cleveland posted a career-high 25 points vs. Ole Miss (Dec. 12), his first 20-point game of the season. Cleveland shot 8-of-17 from the field and 8-of-11 at the free throw line, while leading Southeast with eight rebounds in that game. He scored 16 of his points in 17 minutes during the second half alone. It was Cleveland's team-high sixth double-digit scoring game in eight starts this season.
Closing InAntonius Cleveland is 12 rebounds away from 300 and 20 steals away from 100 in his Southeast career. Cleveland has 288 rebounds for a 4.1 boards per game average and 80 steals for a 1.1 per game average in three years as a Redhawk.
Two in a RowIsiah Jones scored double figures in consecutive starts for the first time this season after pitching in 12 points vs. Bowling Green (Dec. 8) and 15 vs. Ole Miss (Dec. 12). Jones scored 15 of his 27 points in those games from 3-point range. He knocked down two 3s against the Falcons and matched a season-high three against the Rebels. Jones leads Southeast with 12 three-pointers made in nine starts this year.
Redhawk RewindSoutheast gave Southeastern Conference foe Ole Miss all it could handle in a 75-64 loss on Dec. 12. The Redhawks scored the first six points of the game to grab their biggest lead. Southeast then trailed by three (48-45) when Stefan Moody scored 12-straight points to open a double-digit lead for the Rebels. Southeast managed to get within six points three times in the final 1:56, but Ole Miss answered with a basket on each of those occasions. Ole Miss was the first SEC team to play at the Show Me Center and first to play on an Ohio Valley Conference campus in 22 years.
Strong Second HalfThe Redhawks shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field in the second half vs. Ole Miss (Dec. 12). It was Southeast's highest second-half shooting percentage this season.
Antonius Cleveland scored 16 points in 17 minutes and
Isiah Jones added 13 points in 17 minutes during the Redhawks strong second stanza.
Jones Gets Career-High in AssistsIsiah Jones had five of his career-high eight assists in the second half vs. Ole Miss (Dec. 12). Jones became the second Southeast player to get eight or more assists in a game this season. He leads the Redhawks with 23 assists, averaging 2.5 a game.
Against the Horizon LeagueSoutheast is 9-4 all-time against the Horizon League. The Redhawks have faced five of the Horizon League's 10 teams, including Milwaukee (5-1), Green Bay (2-2), Northern Kentucky (1-0), Cleveland State (1-1) and Illinois-Chicago (0-2).
10-Man RosterThe departures of
Marcus Wallace,
J.T. Jones and
Ladarius Coleman narrowed Southeast's roster to 10 players. Southeast played with nine players vs. Ole Miss (Dec. 12) after
Jamaal Calvin was sidelined for the third game in a row with a hamstring injury. The Redhawk starters accounted for 63 of Southeast's 64 points against the Rebels. All nine players saw action in that game with
Jaylin Stewart scoring the Redhawks only point off the bench at the free throw line.
Almost Time for ConferenceSoutheast has three games left before it officially begins Ohio Valley Conference play. The Redhawks travel to Northern Kentucky (Dec. 19) and Missouri State (Dec. 22), and host Harris-Stowe (Dec. 27) before opening league action at home against Belmont (Dec. 31). Southeast's 16-game OVC slate includes home matchups with Belmont, Tennessee State (Jan. 2), Jacksonville State (Jan. 13), UT Martin (Jan. 23), Austin Peay (Jan. 30), Murray State (Feb. 4), SIU Edwardsville (Feb. 18) and Eastern Illinois (Feb. 20), and road games at Morehead State (Jan. 7), Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 9), Tennessee Tech (Jan. 16), SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 28), Eastern Illinois (Feb. 6), UT Martin (Feb. 11), Murray State (Feb. 13) and Austin Peay (Feb. 27).
Road HeavyThe Redhawks played on the road for the sixth time when they visited Memphis on Dec. 5. Belmont (8), UT Martin (8), Austin Peay (7), Southeast (6) and Jacksonville State (6) have played on the road most in the Ohio Valley Conference this season. In all, there are a combined 35 road games between them.
Mileage CheckSoutheast spent six of its first seven games of the 2015-16 season on the road, travelling over 3,600 miles between stops at Dayton, Ohio, Evansville, Indiana, Huntsville, Alabama, Edinburg, Texas, Carbondale, Illinois and Memphis, Tennessee. The Redhawks logged a total of 1,833 miles by charter bus alone.
Hard Non-Conference ScheduleThe Redhawks have had a tough non-conference schedule thus far featuring road matchups with Preseason Atlantic 10 favorite Dayton (Nov. 13) and Evansville (Nov. 15), which was picked second in this year's Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll. Southeast also made trips to Alabama A&M (Nov. 19), Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24) regional rival Southern Illinois (Dec. 2) and Memphis (Dec. 5), and hosted Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28), Bowling Green (Dec. 8) and Ole Miss (Dec. 12). Cleveland's CareerAntonius Cleveland has 734 points, 288 rebounds, 126 assists, 80 steals, 36 blocks and boasts a 10.3 points per game average in 71 games and 59 starts during his career. Cleveland also has 38 double-digit scoring games, three double figure rebound performances, three 20+ point games and two double-doubles in his college career.
About Northern KentuckyNorthern Kentucky, a member of the Horizon League, is in its fourth year reclassifying to the NCAA Division I level. NKU, Grand Canyon, UMass Lowell, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word are currently the teams making that transition. The Norse picked up both their wins at home this season, beating Tiffin, 83-71, on Nov. 17 and Norfolk State, 81-60, on Dec. 13. NKU, however, has dropped five of its last six contests. The Norse have four players averaging double figures in the scoring column led by Jalen Billups (15.3 ppg). Lavone Holland (11.6), Tyler White (10.8) and Cole Murray (10.6) follow. NKU is shooting 44.2 percent from the field with 55 three-pointers (6.8 per game).
