Series HistorySoutheast and Ole Miss meet for the second time Saturday. The Rebels make their first trip to Cape Girardeau after hosting the Redhawks in the Jack Jones Classic a year ago. Ole Miss won that game by a score of 82-52 at the Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi on Dec. 22, 2014. Southeast will travel to Ole Miss next season.
SEC TiesRick Ray spent the last three seasons as head coach at Southeastern Conference member Mississippi State. Ray sets to coach against the first team from his former conference Saturday. He has a record of 2-5 against Ole Miss. The Rebels are the fourth SEC team the Redhawks play in two years. Last season, Southeast lost at Missouri (65-61 on Dec. 2), vs. Arkansas (84-67 on Dec. 20 in Little Rock) and vs. Ole Miss (82-51 on Dec. 22 in Southaven, Miss.).
Against the SECSoutheast is 1-20 all-time against the current Southeastern Conference membership. The Redhawks only win was against Arkansas (28-21) in 1924-25. Southeast faced Alabama (0-1), Arkansas (1-8), LSU (0-1), Mississippi State (0-1), Missouri (0-7), Ole Miss (0-1) and Vanderbilt (0-1).
It's Been a Long TimeIt's been 22 years since a Southeastern Conference school has played on an Ohio Valley Conference campus. Murray State last hosted Ole Miss on Dec. 22, 1993. The OVC currently has a streak of 26-straight losses against SEC foes. Murray State had the league's last win against an SEC team when it beat Auburn, 79-59, in Charleston, South Carolina on Nov. 18, 2012.
Redhawks Second in 3-Point FG Percentage DefenseThe Redhawks rank second in the Ohio Valley Conference in 3-point field goal percentage defense. Opponents are shooting just 31.1 percent (55-of-177) from beyond the arc against Southeast.
Back in CapeSoutheast closes out a brief two-game homestand against Ole Miss Saturday. The Redhawks are at home for the second time this week and just the third this year. Southeast played six of its first seven contests on the road. Southeast fell to Loyola Marymount, 73-60, on Nov. 28 and Bowling Green, 79-52, on Dec. 8 at the Show Me Center.
Jones Breaks Out of Shooting SlumpAfter going two-straight games without a field goal,
Isiah Jones scored 12 points to lead all Southeast scorers against Bowling Green (Dec. 8). Jones shot 5-of-13 from the field and knocked down two 3-pointers in 29 minutes. He also had three rebounds, an assist and one steal. Jones scored double figures for the second time this season and 19th in his career. He missed 17-consecutive field goals before scoring on a jumper at the 15:05 mark of the first half.
Cleveland Gets Season-High in ReboundsAntonius Cleveland had a game and season-high 10 rebounds against Bowling Green (Dec. 8). Cleveland had four offensive rebounds en route to the third double-digit rebound effort of his career. He is the second Redhawk to get double-digit rebounds in a game this season.
Cleveland Clears 700 PointsJunior guard
Antonius Cleveland went over 700 points in his career when he returned to his hometown to face Memphis at the FedExForum on Dec. 5. Cleveland scored 14 points on 5-of-13 field goals and 4-of-7 free throws. He also had six rebounds in 28 minutes. He scored double figures for the fifth time in seven starts this season and now has 709 points and a 10.1 points per game average in his Southeast career.
Looking to Get AheadSoutheast has gone three-straight halves without a lead. The Redhawks last led an opponent when
Antonius Cleveland's layup gave Southeast a 24-22 edge at the 6:48 mark of the first half against Memphis (Dec. 5).
Hard Non-Conference ScheduleThe Redhawks have had a tough non-conference schedule thus far featuring road matchups with Preseason Atlantic 10 favorite Dayton (Nov. 13) and Evansville (Nov. 15), which was picked second in this year's Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll. Southeast also made trips to Alabama A&M (Nov. 19), Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24) regional rival Southern Illinois (Dec. 2) and Memphis (Dec. 5), and hosted Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28) and Bowling Green (Dec. 8). Combined, those teams own a record of 46-19 with two of the Redhawks eight foes (Dayton, Alabama A&M) sitting with one loss this year.
About Ole MissOle Miss enters Saturday's game on a three-game winning streak and owns a 6-2 overall record this season. Stefan Moody leads the SEC and ranks 11th in the nation in scoring with 23 points per game. Sebastian Saiz follows with 13 points a game. As a team, Ole Miss is averaging 72.8 points per contest.
