Series HistorySoutheast and Southern Illinois hook up for the 115th time Wednesday. SIU leads the all-time series, 69-45. The Redhawks are 14-42 against the Salukis in Carbondale. Southeast has lost its last seven games at SIU Arena and hasn't won in Carbondale since 1982-83 (55-50, Dec. 4, 1982). SIU won 14 of the last 16 matchups between these teams on its homecourt.
Road HeavyThe Redhawks play their Ohio Valley Conference high fifth road game when they make the short trip to Southern Illinois. Southeast plays outside of Cape Girardeau in six of its first seven games this year. The Redhawks closed out November with a 73-60 loss to Loyola Marymount in their home-opener on Nov. 28.
Defense Plays StrongSoutheast held an opponent under 40 percent from the field for the first time this season vs. Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28). The Lions made just 23-of-63 field goals for 36.5 percent. Prior to that, Southern Illinois was the last non-conference opponent to shoot below 40 percent against the Redhawks when it hit 35.1 percent (20-of-57) of its field goals on Dec. 10, 2014. Southeast is third in the Ohio Valley Conference in 3-point percentage defense, limiting its opponents to a .319 clip (37-of-116) beyond the arc.
Familier with the MVCRick Ray's first NCAA Division I coaching job was at Indiana State. Ray was an assistant coach there from 1997-2004, helping ISU to consecutive 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances in 1999-2000 and 2000-01. In 1999-2000, the Sycamores compiled a 14-4 record in the Missouri Valley Conference and won the regular-season title. ISU then won the MVC Tournament the following season. The Sycamores upset No. 4 seed Oklahoma in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. In addition, Ray was part of the ISU staff that defeated perennial power Indiana in back-to-back seasons. He also worked four years as an assistant coach under Matt Painter at Purdue (2006-10), a former Southern Illinois assistant and head coach. Ray enjoyed one win at SIU Arena as part of Indiana State's coaching staff on Feb. 18, 2009 (78-72). The Sycamores were 2-11 against the Salukis with Ray on staff and that record included a 0-6 mark in Carbondale.
Another Starting LineupIt's been a challenge for the Redhawks to establish any type of flow early on this season. Southeast has used four different starting lineups in five games, with
Marcus Wallace,
Isiah Jones,
Antonius Cleveland,
Joel Angus III and
Trey Kellum becoming the latest combination to take the court vs. Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28). The other three lineups consisted of
Robby Dosier, Kellum, Jones, Angus and
J.T. Jones at Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24); Wallace, Jones, Cleveland, Angus and
Tony Anderson at Dayton (Nov. 13); and
Eric McGill, Jones, Cleveland, Angus and
J.T. Jones at Evansville (Nov. 15) and Alabama A&M (Nov. 19).
Full RosterSoutheast had all 13 players on its roster available for the first time this season against Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28). Prior to that, the Redhawks had players miss four-straight games due to either a suspension or injury.
Cleveland Notches Season-HighJunior
Antonius Cleveland scored a season-high 17 points as Southeast's only double-digit scorer against Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28). Cleveland made 6-of-11 field goals and a perfect 5-of-5 free throws in 20 minutes. He scored double figures in four-straight games. Cleveland has 36 double-digit scoring games in his career, most among the Redhawks returnees.
Tough StartThe Redhawks are 0-5 through one month this season. Southeast, which is looking to snap a six-game losing streak dating back to last year, is winless in its first five games of a season for the first time since 2010-11. That year, the Redhawks went 0-10 and did not get their first win until Dec. 11 (101-52 vs. Hannibal-LaGrange). Southeast is currently one of 15 NCAA Division I teams without a victory this season. The others are Alcorn (0-4), USC Upstate (0-7), Delaware State (0-7), Drexel (0-6), Eastern Illinois (0-4), Lehigh (0-6), Marshall (0-3), Mississippi Valley State (0-7), Mt. St. Mary's (0-6), North Carolina A&T (0-7), Prairie View (0-6), Southern Mississippi (0-4), Southern Utah (0-5) and Central Connecticut State (0-5).
Road WarriorsSoutheast spent its first four games of the 2015-16 season on the road, travelling roughly 3,585 miles between stops at Dayton, Ohio, Evansville, Indiana, Huntsville, Alabama and Edinburg, Texas. The Redhawks logged a total of 1,698 miles by charter bus alone. Southeast heads to Memphis (Dec. 5) following its trip to Southern Illinois.
Speaking of Away GamesThe Redhawks have lost eight-straight games outside of Cape Girardeau. Southeast lost three Ohio Valley Conference road games and an OVC Tournament matchup with Morehead State in 2014-15 before starting this year at 0-4 away from home. Southeast's last road win was a 70-64 victory at Austin Peay on Jan. 31, 2015.
On the ReboundThe Redhawks outrebounded their opponent for the third game in a row when they held a 42-37 advantage vs. Loyola Marymount (Nov. 28). Southeast averaged 42 boards per game and had a total of 47 offensive rebounds in those contests. The Redhawks pulled down a season-high 17 offensive rebounds against Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24) and rank second in the Ohio Valley Conference with 13.8 offensive rebounds per game.
Home Sweet HomeSoutheast freshman guard
Robby Dosier returns to his hometown of Carbondale, Illinois to face the Salukis Wednesday. Dosier was a four-year letterman and two-year starter at Marion High School under former Southern Illinois player and assistant coach Shane Hawkins. Senior guard
Isiah Jones also has Illinois ties. Jones, who is fourth on the team with 7.8 points per game in five starts this season, is from Pulaski, 40 miles south of Carbondale.
Free Throw WoesThe Redhawks have shot under 50 percent at the free throw line in four of their five games this season. Southeast is currently 12th in the Ohio Valley Conference and 346th in the nation with a .505 clip (55-of-109).
How About From Three?Southeast made a season-high seven 3-pointers at Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24). The Redhawks have a total of 23 threes, second-fewest in the Ohio Valley Conference. Southeast is 23-of-92 (.250) from 3-point range.
Isiah Jones has a team-high seven 3-pointers made this year.
Starting DebutsSix different Redhawks have made starting debuts this season, including
Joel Angus III,
Eric McGill,
Tony Anderson,
J.T. Jones,
Trey Kellum and
Robby Dosier. Kellum (10.7 ppg) and Angus (10 ppg) rank second and third on the team in scoring, respectively, while McGill is averaging 25 minutes per contest.
Start Me UpJunior guard
Antonius Cleveland started 34 of his last 35 games. He was one of two Redhawks to start every game a year ago. Cleveland missed his first start of the season at Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24). He started 33-straight contests before that.
About Southern IllinoisSouthern Illinois is 6-1 this season, its best start since 2005-06. SIU won its first five games before suffering a 71-66 loss to UTEP at the Corpus Christi Coastal Challenge. The Salukis edged Portland, 80-79, on Nov. 28 during their last time out. Anthony Beane leads the Missouri Valley Conference and is 38th in the nation with 20.4 points per game. Beane is also 11th nationally in total points (143) and field goals made (49). He topped the 30-point mark twice this season and enters Wednesday's game with 1,443 career points, four away from moving to 13th on SIU's all-time career scoring list. Beane is the son of former Southeast and current SIU assistant coach Anthony Beane Sr.. He coached the Redhawks from 1997-2000. Sean O'Brien (13.6 ppg) and Mike Rodriguez (10.9 ppg) follow. Rodriguez was named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 23. As a team, SIU leads the MVC with 79.9 points a game.
