PDF Box Score CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – After a late start due to a weather delay, Southeast Missouri baseball (22-11, 13-3 OVC) was defeated 21-4 by the Austin Peay (14-20, 6-7 OVC) Governors early Saturday morning.
The Redhawks saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end with the loss and are no longer perfect in Ohio Valley Conference play on the road, in which they were 9-0. This is the Redhawks' first OVC loss since March 22 against Morehead State at home.
First pitch was officially at 8:31 p.m. after a two hour and 31 minute weather delay. The game was originally scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. but thunderstorms rolled in about 5 o'clock during pregame warm-ups.
Jason Blum led off the game with a single to center field and stole second.
Scott Mitchell hit his first extra base hit in a Redhawk uniform to score Blum. Mitchell advanced to third on a groundout then tagged and scored on a sacrifice fly from
Derek Gibson to give Southeast a 2-0 lead in the first frame.
A leadoff hit batsman, a passed ball, and an error put runners on the corners with no out for the Govs in the bottom of the first inning. A strikeout and a double steal scored the first run or Austin Peay. Two singles later tied the game at two runs apiece with only one out. A walk loaded the bases followed by another walk to drive in the go-ahead run for Austin Peay. With bases still loaded, Mitchell's second passed ball of the inning scored the Gov's fourth run. Chase Hamilton split the right center gap to plate two more runs in the inning. A popup to short got the Redhawks out of the inning but not after Austin Peay took a 6-2 lead.
The first inning alone took 35 minutes to complete.
With one out in the top of the second,
Cole Bieser singled, followed by a double by
Branden Boggetto to put runners on second and third.
Andy Lack grounded out to short but Bieser scored and Boggetto took third on the play.
Jason Blum drew a two-out walk then stole second. A balk called on starting pitcher Alex Robles scored Boggetto and put Blum on third. Blum was stranded on third but Southeast used two runs in the inning to narrow the Gov lead to 6-4; however, this would be the closest the Redhawks would come to the Govs the rest of the game.
The Govs continued their scoring in the second inning. After Ridge Smith singled up the middle and stole second, he scored on a single by Robles, who took second on a throwing error by Gibson in left field. Redhawk starter
Tyler Iago's night was brought to an end after only one and a third innings.
Skylar Cobb was called in from the bullpen. Cobb retired the first batter he faced but then gave up the Govs' eighth run on a flare to shallow center. Cobb retired Garrett Copeland to strand runners on second and third in the second. Austin Peay led 8-4 going to the third inning.
Austin Peay loaded the bases with no out in the third frame. Smith singled to plate one run followed by a sac fly for the first out in the inning. With runners on first and second, both runners stole a base. On the play, Mitchell threw down to second, in which no one was covering, allowing the throw to roll in to center field, scoring the Govs' third run of the inning. Cobb struck out Dre Gleason and was taken out of the game, replaced by Garrett Stockton. Stockton had not seen action since Mar. 28 at UT Martin. Stockton retired P.J. Torres on a fly out to center to close the inning. Austin Peay led 11-4 after three complete innings.
With two out in the fourth, Stockton was an out away from dealing the Govs their first scoreless inning. With runners on second and third, Alex Bredlau ripped a double down the left field line to score both runners; both runs were unearned due to the Redhawks' fourth error of the game earlier in the inning. 13-4 after four innings.
Austin Peay plated seven runs in the fifth inning on six total hits. It was the first inning the Redhawks did not commit an error in the game. 13 Gov batters had a plate appearance in the inning. The Govs led 20-4 after five innings and nearly two hours and 40 minutes of play.
Cole Ferguson, who is the Redhawks' other starting catcher, took the mound in the sixth inning for his collegiate pitching debut. Not only did Ferguson look good in his collegiate debut, he threw the first scoreless inning to the Govs.
In the bottom of the seventh, another position player,
Nolan Fisher, took the mound for Southeast for his third pitching appearance of his career. Fisher gave up one hit but got the third batter of the inning to ground in to a 3-6-1 double play for the Govs' second scoreless inning of the game.
Austin Peay added an additional two runs in the eighth inning to bring the score to 22-4.
The final out of the game was recorded at 12:05 a.m. Saturday morning. The official game duration was three hours and 35 minutes.
The Govs outhit Southeast 22-9 in the game. Bieser and Boggetto were the only Redhawks to record multiple hits in the contest, both tallying two.
Every hitter in the Austin Peay lineup had at least one hit in the game. Smith, Robles, Gleason, Gray, and Hamilton all had three hits.
Iago falls to 4-2 after only pitching one and a third innings. Southeast used six total pitchers in the game, two of which are normally position players on the Redhawks' roster.
Robles (4-2) earned the victory, pitching six complete innings. Three relief pitchers were used and they all pitched one inning.
The Redhawks and Govs square off again at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Ryan Lenaburg will be on the bump for Southeast Missouri in the game.
