Big Innings Hurt Redhawks in 11-6 Loss at Belmont

The Redhawks trailed 7-5 going into the bottom of the eighth inning

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team dropped an 11-6 decision to Belmont Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. The Redhawks drop to 1-1 in the conference and 9-7 overall with the loss as the win by the Bruins (10-4, 1-1 OVC) was their first win in Ohio Valley Conference play.

The Bruins jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the opening two frames. Belmont recorded three runs in each inning with four hits in each frame. Judah Akers and Josh Davis each added a pair of hits and a pair of RBI during the stretch.

The Redhawks cut the Belmont lead to 6-3 in the top of the third inning as they plated a trio of runs. Sophomore Jason Blum scored the Redhawks' first run on a passed ball. Later in the frame Branden Boggetto delivered  a two-run single up the middle to cap the Southeast scoring in the inning.

The Bruins added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Southeast responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Matt Tellor and Dalton Hewitt recorded RBI hits to highlight the frame.

Belmont added four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on two hits as Jared Breen highlighted the frame with a two-run double down the left field line.

Southeast added another run in the ninth inning on a Boggetto double as Tellor scored from first base after reaching on a single, but Josh Davis closed the door earning his third save of the season.

Boggetto finished 2-for-5 with three RBI as he also recorded his fourth double of the season. Tellor added a pair of hits going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Zack Smith (1-2) picked up the loss going 3.1 innings allowing seven runs on eight hits. Hank Williams, Jr. was solid in relief as he went 3.2 innings allowing one hit and one earned run as he kept the Redhawks within striking distance of the Belmont lead.

Austin Cole (3-0) picked up the win for Belmont going five innings allowing four earned runs (five runs) on six hits.

Breen led the Bruins offensively going 4-for-4 with three RBI as his four hits tied a career-high.

The Redhawks and Bruins wrap up their three game set on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Freshman Alex Winkelman is expected to get the start for Southeast.
