Baseball Splits Twin Bill with Morehead State

The Redhawks took the first game 10-5 with the Eagles taking the rubber game of the series 11-8

The Redhawks split a twin bill with Morehead State on Saturday, Freshman Tyler Thomas picked up his first career win.

Morehead, Ky. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team split a twin bill with Morehead State Saturday afternoon at Allen Field in Morehead, Ky. The Redhawks took the opener 10-5 as Morehead State took the second game 11-8.
 
The Redhawks move to 12-13 overall and 4-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference after the split. Morehead State improved to 9-15 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
 
Game One – Southeast Missouri 10 Morehead State 5
 
Southeast Missouri picked up a 10-5 victory over Morehead State in the first game of a twin bill Saturday afternoon in Morehead, Ky. Junior Matt Tellor led the Redhawks going 4-for-6 with three RBI and four runs scored.
 
The Redhawks tied a season-high with 18 hits. Five Redhawks recorded multi-hit games. Cole Bieser, Alex Burridge and Jason Blum each added three hits for Southeast.
 
Freshman Tyler Thomas got the win for the Redhawks, his first career victory as he relieved Southeast starter Zack Smith as the senior went 5.1 innings. Seniors Tony Zerrusen and Bobby Hurst combined for 2.2 scoreless innings to end the contest
 
The Redhawks opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs. Blum plated Tellor, who opened the inning with a single on a safety squeeze. John Logan Zink later drove in Andy Lennington to give Southeast a 2-0 lead.
 
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with four runs. Duran Elmore highlighted the inning with an RBI single that Elmore would round the bases on after a pair of errors by the Redhawks.
 
Tellor tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run homer to left field in the top of the fifth inning. It was his fourth home run of the season as it plated Cole Bieser as he reached on infield single.
 
The Redhawks took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning as Jason Blum scored on Alex Burridge's single off of the right field fence. Morehead State tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run from Drew Williams.
 
Southeast took back the lead at 7-5 in the seventh with a pair of runs. Blum and Dalton Hewitt added RBI singles in the frame. Hewitt just missed a home run as it went off the top of the right field fence.
 
The Redhawks added three more insurance runs in the final two innings on their way to a 10-5 win. Tellor hit his second home run of the game in the eighth with Derek Gibson added a two-run single in the ninth inning.
 
Clark Pence (0-1) was tagged with the loss allowing two runs on four hits. Chase Greenwell led the Eagles going 3-for-5.
 
Game Two – Morehead State 11 Southeast Missouri 8
 
Southeast Missouri dropped an 11-8 decision in the second game on Saturday afternoon at Allen Field. The Redhawks left 13 runners on-base in the contest as the Eagles took the rubber game of the series.
 
The Redhawks got on the board in the first inning with three runs as they were all recorded with two outs. Blum highlighted the frame with a two-run single through the left side.
 
Morehead State tied the game in the bottom of the opening frame with three runs of their own. Greenwell highlighted the inning with a two-run homer to center field.
 
Southeast took back the lead at 5-3 in the second inning with a two-run double down the left field line from Lennington.
 
The Redhawks added two runs in the third inning to extend their lead to 7-3, but the Eagles battled back in the fourth inning with four runs to tie the contest at 7-7. Taylor Pickens highlighted the frame with a two-run double to left field.
 
Both teams exchanged runs in the seventh inning. Hewitt drove in the Redhawks' run with a single to right field and Williams drove in the Eagles run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
 
The Redhawks used a safety squeeze to try and take the lead in the top of the eighth, but Lennington was called out at home on close call as the game remained tied.
 
The Eagles took an 11-8 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning on their way to the win. Chris Robinson cleared the bases with triples to centerfield as Cole Bieser just missed ending the Morehead State threat.
 
Zerrusen was tagged with the loss for the Redhawks. Alex Winkelman got the start as he went 3.2 innings allowing seven runs. Trevor Kill was outstanding out of the bullpen throwing 3.1 innings allowing one run.
 
The Redhawks return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they head to in-state rival Missouri State for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
