CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri junior forward Leon Powell was named Second-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference Tuesday. Powell is the Redhawks first All-Conference selection since 2006-07, the last time Southeast made the league's postseason tournament.
A native of St. Louis, Powell ended the regular-season leading the nation in field goal percentage (64.0). He leads the Redhawks and ranks among the top OVC leaders in scoring (14.5 ppg), rebounding (7.8 rpg) and blocks (45). Powell scored double figures in 25 of his 30 starts and pitched in an OVC single-game high 36 points in an 82-75 win over UT Martin on Jan. 3.
Powell, who registered a team-high six double-doubles, was also named to the league's All-Newcomer Team. He has been named OVC Newcomer of the Week five times this season, winning the second-most Newcomer of the Week honors in the league.
Morehead State's Kenneth Faried won both the Player and Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Tennessee State's Patrick Miller was named Freshman of the Year and Murray State's Billy Kennedy was named Coach of the Year.
Seventh-seeded Southeast and sixth-seeded Eastern Kentucky meet in the first round of the OVC Tournament Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m., CT, at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.
