CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Southeast Missouri faced a conference match up at the Second Annual Redhawk Fall Tournament, earning a definitive victory over Western Illinois University.
SEMO hosted one team: Western Illinois University. Both teams competed in singles and doubles matches on Friday and Saturday.
Day 1
The teams played two doubles matches and one singles match on Friday. A scheduled second singles matched was unplayable due to weather.
The Redhawks went 7-1 in the doubles matches.
In the first round of doubles, the Redhawks won three out of the four matches. Mana Fawcett and Jessica Hess of WIU took the first match from Maja Bajorek and Mia Mayerova 6-4. Sofia Zemstova and Michelle Huebner won their match against Chloe Routier and Nadezhda Petkova 7-5. Yontha Tadoum and Pien de Greef defeated Emma Dell and Lara de Souza 6-3. Maria Drag and Chia-Ling Tsao finished the round with a victory over Anna-Evelina Trush and Chloe Ananya Dhankhar 6-0.
In the second round, SEMO won all four of the matches.
Bajorek and Drag took the first match from Fawcett and Hess 7-6, 7-5. Zemstova and Tadoum defeated Petkova and Dhankhar 6-3. Mayerova and Huebner defeated Dell and Souza 7-6, 7-3. To finish the doubles matches for the day, de Greef and Tsao took the match from Trush and Routier 6-3.
In the singles portion of the day SEMO went 6-0.
Tsao defeated Trush from WIU 6-2, 7-5. Drag took down Routier 6-0, 6-4. Zemtsova won her match defeating Laura de Souza 6-2, 6-1. Bajorek beat Mana Fawcett 6-4, 6-4, 10-6 and Mia Mayerova took down Emma Dell 6-3, 6-2.
Day 2
On the second day the teams each played one doubles match, and one singles match.
In the doubles match all of the Redhawk duos won two out the three matches. Drag and de Greef were defeated by Fawcett and Hess 6-2. Tadoum and Tsao took their match from Souza and Dell 6-4. Heubner and Zemstova finished the match with a win over WIU's Trush and Dhankar 6-2.
Drag defeated Fawcett 6-2, 6-2, de Greef took down Dell 6-1, 6-0 and Tadoum defeated Trush 8-5 at No. 4 singles. Michelle Huebner was taken down by Dhankhan 6-3, 7-5. Bajorek defeated Routier 6-3, 6-3.
Looking ahead
"It was a great start to the season. Unfortunately the third team pulled out so it was just us and Western Illinois." said Coach Steven Brooks. "They are a good team. They beat us last spring and we ended tied for second in the OVC with them. It was good to get the returners back into action. I am very happy with our freshman as well. They brought new excitement to the team. "
The Redhawks will travel to Evansville Indiana to compete in the OVC Fall Tournament hosted by the University of Southern Indiana on September 25th.
