CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Baseball (27-19, 13-6 OVC) fell in the opening game of the series with Tennessee Tech (30-17, 12-7 OVC) by a final score of 8-7 in 11 innings on Friday night from Capaha Field.
The Redhawks, trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning, got a leadoff walk from designated hitter
Gunnar Doyle. Freshman
Caleb Champion pinch ran for Doyle and moved up 90-feet after a perfect sacrifice bunt from
Carson Schrack.
A walk to
Shea McGahan and a wild pitch during the at-bat of
Andrew Ramirez moved Champion and McGahan to second and third with just one out. Ramirez recorded an RBI groundout to second base, scoring Champion to force the game into extra innings at 7-7.
The Golden Eagles would move back ahead in the top of the 11
th inning with an RBI single to left field by Preston Steele to make it 8-7 TTU as they would hold on to win the contest on Friday night.
The Redhawks scored seven runs on 11 hits, led by Ramirez who finished 3-5 at the plate with an RBI, three runs scored, and a walk. Outfielders
Cole Warehime and
Michael Mugan each recorded multi-hit games with two hits apiece.
RHP
Nathan Mertens (ND) exited the game in the sixth inning after another stellar outing. Mertens allowed just one run on five hits, struck out four, and surrendered just two walks.
