Florida International Transfer Guard Aquan Smart Signs with the Redhawks

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Guard Aquan Smart signed with Southeast Missouri Wednesday. Smart joins the Redhawks after playing one season at Florida International University.

A native of Evanston, Illinois, Smart played in 26 games off the bench for the Panthers this past season. He averaged 4.1 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest and knocked down 16 three-pointers. Smart also dished out 41 assists, had 19 steals and gathered seven blocks.

"Aquan brings all the skill sets you must have in order to be an elite guard in the Ohio Valley Conference," said Head Coach Brad Korn. "He has great vision and play-making ability, and fits in perfectly with the way we play offensively. Aquan is able to push in transition, distribute in the half court and can play off guard positions for us. His speed and quickness should serve him well on the defensive end as well. We are looking forward to him bringing his experience and growth to our Redhawk Basketball Family."

Prior to FIU, Smart appeared in 22 games as a reserve guard at Big Ten Conference member Maryland. He scored 30 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and had 13 assists during the 2020-21 campaign.

As a prep, Smart was a three-star recruit and the eighth ranked player in the state of Illinois at Niles North High School. He was a unanimous Illinois Basketball Coaches Association First-Team 4A All-State selection. An Illinois Associated Press Second-Team All-State pick, Smart led Niles North to a 27-6 record and regional and conference titles with an average of more than 20 points per game as a senior. He averaged 16.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.3 steals as a junior, and helped lead Niles North to 20-win campaigns during each of his varsity seasons.

Smart is the fourth signee in SEMO's 2022-23 class joining fellow NCAA Division I transfers Kobe Clark (F, Georgetown) and Gavin Elkamil (G, Tulsa), and Evan Eursher (G, Hendersonville, Tenn./The Webb School).
