Redhawks Head to Illinois State for Redbird Duals Saturday and Sunday to Cap Fall Slate

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis will wrap up its 2022 fall season this weekend, competing at Illinois State's Redbird Duals Saturday and Sunday at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts in Normal, Illinois. 
 
Saturday will open with the Redhawks facing Milwaukee in doubles at 9 a.m., CT before singles matchups with host Illinois State followed by Eastern Illinois, starting at 10 a.m.
 
On Sunday, SEMO will take on Illinois State and then Eastern Illinois in doubles at 9 a.m., before wrapping the Duals with a singles meeting with Milwaukee at 11 a.m.
 
The tournament will be the sixth and final competition of the fall for SEMO after coming off the 2022 ITA Central Regional Championships Oct. 13-17 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. 
 
Last Time Out
Romana Tarajova advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2022 ITA Division I Women's Central Regional Championship, opening the tournament with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Bradley University's Madalena Andrade. 
 
Tarajova then defeated Carmen Roxana Manu (Kansas), 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, in a tough three-set battle in the Round of 64. 
 
On Oct. 15, Tarajova, a graduate student from Dolný Kubín, Slovakia, fell in the Round of 32 to Oklahoma State's Alana Wolfberg, 6-3, 7-5, to conclude her phenomenal tournament run. 
 
Daniela Hlacikova, Cosima Trinity Calinescu, and Vivian Lai all advanced through singles qualifying at the Championship and competed in the main singles draw. 
 
Calinescu overcame Aliksandra Lebedeva of Oral Roberts, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, before falling to Oklahoma State's Raquel Gonzalez in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
 
Hlacikova registered a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nebraska's Jessica Aragon to commence the Championship. Hlacikova, a junior from Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, then dropped a 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1 decision to Emma Staker of Oklahoma. 
 
Lai fell in her main singles draw opener to Grace O'Donnell (Arkansas), 6-2, 6-1.
 
In the main doubles draw, Lai teamed up with Ksenia Shikanova for an 8-3 victory over Konomi Miyakawa and Nicole Ross of Central Arkansas. 
 
The Redhawk duo of Lai and Shikanova then fell to Lenka Stara and O'Donnell (Arkansas), 8-2.
 
Romana Tarajova and Lera Valeeva also picked up a doubles victory. The team edged Omaha's Zoe Adkins and Keegan VanPelt, 8-6, before falling to Iowa State. 
 
Daniela Hlacikova and Teona Velkoska were overcome by Kansas City's Michaela Xibilia and Laura Baroja, 8-7 (7-5).
 
Scouting the Opponents
SEMO will face Milwaukee, Illinois State, and Eastern Illinois this weekend at Illinois State's Redbird Duals.
 
Milwaukee
Milwaukee went 10-14 including 3-3 in the Horizon League in 2022 and finished as the Tournament Runners-up. 
 
The Panthers most recently competed at the three-day Bulldog Classic in Des Moines, Iowa, Oct. 28-30. Alice Shields paces Milwaukee with a 7-2 singles mark while the Panthers have four doubles teams with a 2-1 record. Milwaukee will conclude its fall season Nov. 11-13 at Western Michigan's Invite. 
 
Illinois State
The Redbirds posted a 17-7 record in 2022 and went 4-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play. As the No. 2 seed, ISU bested Missouri State, Bradley, and then Drake (4-3) in the Championship Finals to win the 2022 MVC Tournament Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. Illinois State represented the Valley in the NCAA Tournament, taking on Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, in the First Round. 
 
The Redbirds most recently competed at the ITA Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Oct. 20-22. Nevena Kolarevic advanced to the Round of 32s at the Championship.
 
Eastern Illinois
The Panthers went 4-18 in 2022 and were 1-6 in Ohio Valley Conference matches. EIU will compete at Illinois State for the second time this fall, this weekend. 
 
Last time out, the Panthers picked up four doubles wins, and three singles wins during weekend competition at the Illinois State Redbird Invite Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Christine Gouws and Addison Brown collected two wins for the Panthers in doubles action. Madeline Monroy played with Elizaveta Bukraba-Ulanova for another doubles wins while Brittany Steven and Lauren Ellis provided EIU's third doubles win of the weekend.
 
Looking Ahead
SEMO women's tennis will next return to the court for the Spring 2023 Dual Season on Jan. 21. The Redhawks will open the campaign with a doubleheader against Missouri and Central Arkansas at the Mizzou Tennis Complex in Columbia, Missouri.
