SEMO Tennis Set to Host 2022 Redhawk Invitational this Weekend

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis will host the Redhawk Invitational Friday and Saturday at the John C. Bierk Redhawks Tennis Complex to continue its 2022 fall season. SEMO will welcome Western Illinois of the Summit League and Ohio Valley Conference newcomer Southern Indiana to Cape Girardeau for the two-day tournament. Admission is free to the public.
Friday's competition will begin at 4 p.m., CT with SEMO taking on Western Illinois in solely doubles matches.
On Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., the Redhawks will face off with Western Illinois once again, in a full match before wrapping up the Redhawk Invitational with a contest against Southern Indiana at 3 p.m., CT.

This weekend's Redhawk Invitational will continue SEMO's fall season. The Redhawks have already competed in a pair of tournaments, most recently defeating Saint Louis and Lindenwood at the SLU Invitational in St. Charles, Missouri, on Sept. 24.
The Redhawks defeated SLU by a final score of 6-1 before turning around and sweeping Lindenwood 7-0.
SEMO dropped the doubles point to Saint Louis to open the hidden dual before rallying off six-straight singles wins over the Billikens.
Romana Tarajova fought past Elizabeth Mintusova, 6-7, 6-4, 10-8, at the top singles position.
Daniela Hlacikova eased past Sandra Gines, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2.
At the third slot, Ksenia Shikanova beat Ksenia Aleshina, 6-3, 6-4, in the battle of the Ksenias.
Cosima Trinity Calinescu continued the singles dominance, edging Mya Spencer, 6-1, 6-3, at the fourth spot. Calinescu, a freshman from Verrières le Buisson, France, leads the Redhawks this fall with a 6-0 mark.
Vivian Lai downed Kate Sexton, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5.
Teona Velkoska had to fight back after dropping the first set to overcome Lizzie Barlow, 4-6, 6-1, 10-4, at the final singles position.
The Redhawks wrapped up the SLU Invitational in dominating fashion, sweeping Lindenwood to claim their second victory of the day.
The Redhawks secured the doubles point, winning all three of those matches. Hlacikova and Velkoska beat Nawal Cheema and Trang Tran, 6-1, at No. 1 before Tarajova and Lai downed Juliana Kulczynski and Alina Jensterle, 6-0. Shikanova and Calinescu then overcame Jordan Le and Eveline Nilsson, 7-5, at the third slot.
Lai and Tarajova are 2-0 in doubles thus far during the fall.
When the competition moved to singles, Hlacikova defeated Nilsson, 6-1, 6-0, competing at the No. 1 slot.
Shikanova then overcame Jordan Le via retirement (3-6, 1-0) at the second position.
Calinescu dropped Trang Tran, 6-2, 6-2, at third singles.
Lai then eased past Alina Jensterle, 6-3, 6-0, at the fourth slot.
Velkoska beat Juliana Kulczynski, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 and Tarajova defeated Nawal Cheema, 6-0, 6-2, at the final spot to complete the sweep.
Lai, Tarajova, and Velkoska, are all 5-0 this fall while Valeeva is 4-0.
Scouting the Opponents
Western Illinois and Southern Indiana went a combined 10-23 during the 2022 spring dual season.
WIU mustered only three wins overall, finishing with a 3-12 record (0-7 Summit League).
USI, who competed at the NCAA Division II level in 2022 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), finished the year with a 7-11 overall record, including 0-6 in the GLVC.
Next up for the Redhawks tennis team will be a trip to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to compete in the 2022 ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Regional Championships from Wednesday, October 12 through Sunday, October 16.
