The Sycamores won that game, 92-81. SEMO and ISU square off for the first time in 18 years. The Sycamores also won that contest at the University Hoopls Classic in New Orleans, Louisiana on Nov. 29, 2002. Â
Early Tip
The Noon, CT start time at Indiana State is Southeast Missouri's earliest it will play all season. Tuesday is SEMO's final game before the Christmas holiday. After that contest, the Redhawks will break for eight days before returning to Ohio Valley Conference action at Tennessee Tech on Dec. 30.Â
Redhawks Fall in OVC Opener
Southeast Missouri dropped another close game, this time a 69-67 setback in its Ohio Valley Conference opener vs. UT Martin on Dec. 18. SEMO fell to 10-20 all-time in Ohio Valley Conference openers. The Redhawks are in their 30th season as a member of the OVC.Â
Overtime vs. the Valley
Indiana State marks Southeast Missouri's third Missouri Valley Conference opponent on its six-game non-conference schedule. SEMO came up short in overtime against both MVC teams it faced this year. The Redhawks lost at home to Southern Illinois, 87-79, on Dec. 2 and, 66-63, at Evansville on Dec. 15.
Season of Thrillers
The Redhawks have lost three games in overtime and one on a last second shot so far this season. Southeast Missouri has been involved in a one-possession contest in regulation during the final minute of all those contests. Most recently, Chris Harris made a 3-pointer to tie the game before UT Martin beat the Redhawks on a baseline shot with one second remaining on Dec. 18.
Patterson Takes the Court
A day after the NCAA voted all Division I transfers could play immediately, forward Manny Patterson took the court for the first time in a Redhawk uniform. A transfer from Green Bay, Patterson grabbed four rebounds in five minutes off the bench.
Another Big Game for Harris
Chris Harris scored over 20 points for the second time in three games. Harris put up a career-high 23 points in his latest effort vs. UT Martin (Dec. 18). Harris shot 7-of-14 from the field and made 7-of-10 free throws. He also made the game-tying 3-pointer with eight seconds left. Harris also scored 21 at Lipscomb on Dec. 9. He scored double figures in five of his first six starts of 2020-21.
Russell Clears 200 Rebounds
Nygal Russell grabbed five rebounds vs. UT Martin (Dec. 18) and as a result surpassed 200 rebounds in his career (202). A redshirt-junior, Russell is now approaching 100 assists in his career. He is four away from that mark.
Working Overtime
The Redhawks went to overtime in three of their six games this year. Southeast Missouri lost at home to Southern Illinois (87-79) on Dec. 2 and at Lipscomb (80-74) on Dec. 9. The Redhawks also fell to Evansville (66-63) on the road on Dec. 15. SEMO was involved in only one overtime game in 31 contests last season. The three overtimes are the most the Redhawks have played during a season in non-conference action in program history.
Redhawk Rewind
Eden Holt made a baseline jumper with one second left to lead UT Martin to a 69-67 win over Southeast Missouri on Dec. 18. Chris Harris, who had a team and career-high 23 points, tied the game at 67-67 on his 3-pointer with eight seconds left. Then, Holt drove to his right and got off his jumper to give the Skyhawks their Ohio Valley Conference opening win. SEMO led for just 1:39 of the contest and was never ahead by more than two points.
Board Certified
The Redhawks outrebounded their opponent for the fourth time in five games when it held a +9 advantage (41-32) on the boards at Evansville (Dec. 15). Southeast Missouri also outrebounded the Purple Aces, 10-5, on the offensive glass. SEMO ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding defense (30.7 rpg) and rebounding margin (+7.0). Overall, the Redhawks are averaging 37.7 rebounds a game.Â
Nice Jump
The Redhawks have made 49 three-pointers through their first six games in 2020-21. Southeast Missouri is averaging 8.2 threes per game. SEMO made only 28 three-pointers in its first six games a year ago. The Redhawks rank second in the Ohio Valley Conference in 3-point field goal percentage. SEMO has hit 49-of-128 threes (.383).
Regulation
Southeast Missouri lost for the first time in regulation this season when UT Martin escaped with a win on a last second shot. Prior to that game, SEMO was 2-0-3 in regulation basketball. The Redhawks lost their last three games by a combined 11 points.
Gotta Love It
Jordan Love leads the team and ranks 11th in the Ohio Valley Conference with nine steals. Love is averaging 1.5 steals a game through six contests this season.
Big Improvement
The Redhawks second win of the 2020-21 campaign came vs. Lipscomb on Dec. 7. Last year, Southeast Missouri didn't pick up its second victory over an NCAA Division I opponent until early February (76-72, vs. Jacksonville State, Feb. 6).
Taylor Getting it Done
Redhawks big man Nolan Taylor is ranked third on the team in scoring (10.7 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.2 rpg). Taylor has scored double figures in four of his first six starts and just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards at Evansville (Dec. 15). Taylor established season-bests in points (16), assists (5) and minutes (28) against Lipscomb (Dec. 7). He previously scored 10 points vs. Kansas City (Nov. 28) and 14 vs. Southern Illinois (Dec. 2). Taylor is also the Redhawks second-leading free throw shooter with a 70.8 percent clip (17-of-24). SEMO is the third Division I school Taylor has played basketball at. Prior to joining the Redhawks, he spent two seasons at Pepperdine and two at Cal Poly. Taylor's 2019-20 campaign was limited to 14 games due to injury.
Seeing Double
The Redhawks currently have three players averaging double figures in the scoring column. Chris Harris leads the way with 16.7 points per game. Eric Reed, Jr. (11.2 ppg) and Nolan Taylor (10.7 ppg) round out that group. Harris also ranks eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring.
Seven Double-Digit Games
Chris Harris, who missed all but two games due to a knee injury in 2019-20, scored double figures in each of the first six games he played at Southeast Missouri. A native of Antioch, Illinois, Harris scored a career-high 23 points vs. UT Martin (Dec. 18). He also made multiple 3-pointers in four of those contests. Harris scored double figures in seven of his eight career games.
Spark Plug
In the first time he was out of the starting lineup this season, guard Eric Reed, Jr. notched a season-best 19 points. Reed, Jr. came off the bench to shoot 8-of-10 from the field and a near perfect 3-of-4 from 3-point range in 23 minutes. He averaged 13 points in his last two games. Reed, Jr. led the Redhawks with 16 points off the bench at Evansville (Dec. 15) and followed that up with 10 points vs. UT Martin (Dec. 18) three days later.
OVC Top-Five
The Redhawks rank among the top five Ohio Valley Conference teams in several categories thus far.
