
Redhawks Conclude Fall Slate with Trip to Florida for the Stetson Invitational

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis heads to Deland, Florida, this weekend to compete at the Stetson Invitational Friday through Sunday to conclude its fall schedule.
Southeast will compete against Florida Southern Friday at 10 a.m., CT, before facing tournament host, Stetson's top team, Saturday at 1 p.m., CT. The Redhawks wrap up the Invitational Sunday with a match against Nova Southeastern at 7 a.m., CT.
Ten teams along with a split Stetson squad make up the 12-team field that will compete on two venues including the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Included among the teams are: Barry, Florida Southern, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State, Milwaukee, New Mexico State, Nova Southeastern, St. Leo, Towson and Stetson.
The teams will play a hidden dual meet format, which essentially acts as a round robin tournament over the course of three days.
Southeast enters the tournament after competing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Ohio Valley Regional Championship in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Oct. 17-19.
Vivian Lai and Teona Velkoska each made quarterfinals appearances at the Regional. Lai finished as a quarterfinalist in the B Flight Singles Draw and also teamed up with Velkoska for a B Flight Doubles Draw quarterfinals appearance.
In the main singles draw, Romana Tarajova and Kseniya Zonova each registered victories over Power-Five Schools to open the tournament. Tarajova bested Nikol Dobrilova of the Big Ten's Purdue, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, while Zonova overcame Kylie Duckworth of the Southeastern Conference's Tennessee, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
Prior to the ITA Regional, SEMO swept William Woods in a home doubleheader held at the Redhawks Tennis Complex on Oct. 5.
Romana Tarajova was perfect in the doubleheader with four wins including two singles wins at the top spot and two wins at first doubles. In singles, Lai, Velkoska and Maja Lundell each achieved a pair of wins against William Woods.
During the 2019 fall campaign, Tarajova, Manuela Barriga, Lai and Velkoska have each won titles at tournaments. Lai captured a doubles championship with Velkoska at the Austin Peay Fall Invitational and also grabbed a singles championship at the Central Arkansas (UCA) Fall Invitational.
Also, at the UCA Fall Invitational, Tarajova and Barriga were awarded their third career fall doubles title at the second flight.
Tarajova, Lai and Velkoska each have compiled 9-3 singles records this fall for first on the team.
In doubles, Lai and Velkoska pace the team with a 6-4 mark.
The Redhawks open their 2020 dual season on Jan. 29 at Saint Louis. The campaign includes 17 matches. SEMO hosts three-straight OVC contests from March 27 through April 4 against Austin Peay, Murray State and Jacksonville State at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
