End of January
Southeast closes out January at Jacksonville State Saturday. The Redhawks are wrapping up their longest road streak in Ohio Valley Conference play. Southeast is 2-1 on its current road trip with 86-74 wins at SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 8) and Eastern Illinois (Jan. 10).
Series History
Jacksonville State leads its all-time series against Southeast by a count of 15-6. The Redhawks have dropped their last three games against the Gamecocks in the series and averaged under 60 points per game (57.6) during that span. Southeast is 2-8 all-time at Pete Mathews Coliseum, last winning there on Jan. 14, 2015 (69-52).
Winning Streak Ends
Southeast saw a two-game winning streak end with a 76-65 loss at Tennessee Tech Thursday. The Redhawks scored below 70 points for the third time this season.
OVC Standings
Jacksonville State marks the fifth team ahead of Southeast in the Ohio Valley Conference that the Redhawks face this season. JSU is locked in a three-way tie for third with Tennessee Tech and Austin Peay, which are all 6-3 in league play. Southeast is 0-4 against teams ahead of it in the conference standings (lost to Belmont, Murray State, Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech). The top-five teams in the OVC have combined for 71 wins overall and 33 victories in league play this year.
Last Time Out
Southeast led at halftime, but slipped in the second half during a 76-65 loss at Tennessee Tech Thursday. The Redhawks led the entire game until Kajon Mack buried a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 38-35 lead with 16:51 to go. After that, Southeast did not lead again. Denzel Mahoney led the Redhawks with 19 points.
Headed for 1,000 Points
Denzel Mahoney is inching his way closer to 1,000 points in his two-year Southeast career.
Mahoney, who led the Redhawks in scoring during 15 games this season, has 924 points in 55 career starts. If he reaches that milestone, Mahoney will be the second player under head coach Rick Ray to score 1,000 points at Southeast. Mahoney will also become the fifth different Redhawk to score over 1,000 career points since 2012-13.
Nine in a Row
Freshman Ledarrius Brewer has scored double figures in nine-consecutive games. Brewer, is Southeast's second-leading scorer with 13.1 points per contest. He drained multiple 3-pointers in six of those nine starts. Brewer ranks 17th in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring and 10th in 3-point field goals made (2.1 per game).
Double Threat
Senior Daniel Simmons and sophomore Denzel Mahoney enter Saturday's game ranked first and second in the Ohio Valley Conference in 3-point field goal percentage, respectively. Simmons is shooting 45.9 percent (34-of-74) and Mahoney is shooting 45.4 percent (44-of-97) from long range through 22 games.
Redhawks Clear 200 Three-Pointers Made
For the second-straight season, Southeast made over 200 three-pointers. The Redhawks have drained a total of 201 treys in 22 games. It is the first time Southeast buried over 200 three-pointers in back-to-back seasons since 2006-07 (254) and 2007-08 (206). The Redhawks set a single-season school record with 263 made 3-pointers a year ago.
Simmons Strong Off the Bench
Daniel Simmons, Southeast's third-leading scorer, pitched in double figures six of his last seven games off the bench. Simmons scored over 20 points twice during that stretch with a career-best 26 at Eastern Illinois (Jan. 10).
Second in the OVC
Denzel Mahoney ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring with 19.6 points a game. Mahoney is behind Murray State's Jonathan Stark (20 ppg) in that category. Belmont's Dyland Windler (17.9 ppg), UT Martin's Matthew Butler (16.5 ppg) and Belmont's Amanze Egekeze (16.5 ppg) round out the top five.
Free Throw Machine
Denzel Mahoney has made and attempted more free throws than anyone in the Ohio Valley Conference this season. Mahoney enters Saturday's game with 135-of-162 free throws for 83.3 percent. The next closest to Mahoney in made free throws is Eastern Kentucky's Nick Mayo with 76. He ranks seventh in the nation in free throws made and ninth in free throw attempts. Mahoney also rates eighth among Southeast's all-time career leaders in free throw percentage (267-of-324, .824) and seventh in single-season free throws made.
