The Redhawks earned an 89-79 victory on the road a season ago, snapping a 10-game losing streak to the Eagles. SEMO's last win over Morehead State at home came on Jan. 24, 2008, 66-58.
Scouting the Eagles
Morehead State comes into Saturday's game sitting second place in the OVC standings with a 7-3 record. The Eagles have only lost to Tennessee State, Belmont, and Jacksonville State. At one point, MSU rattled off a nine-game winning streak (Dec. 3-Jan. 7) including opening OVC play 4-0. The Eagles have won three of their last four games with the lone loss coming at Jacksonville State by a point, 69-68. The Eagles are 5-4 on the road this season. Brianna McQueen leads the Eagles with 13.2 points per game overall and 15.2 PPG in conference games. She has yet to start an OVC game. Eriel McKee is the Eagles' leading rebounder with 7.7 boards a game and also ranks second on the team with 11.3 points per game. As a team, MSU is outscoring its opponents by 8.2 points a game, putting up an average of 71.7 points in a game. The Eagles are also shooting a league-best 38 percent and pulling in 41.2 boards a game in conference contests.
A Look Back
The Redhawks picked up their third conference road victory Wednesday afternoon at Jacksonville State with a 65-58 win over the Gamecocks. The victory is the least amount of points scored by the Redhawks in a winning effort this season; it was previously 68 against Alcorn State. Southeast was led by double-digit point performances of 15 points from
Bri Mitchell and 14 from
Ashton Luttrull. Both extend their double-digit scoring streaks to four and three, respectively. Mitchell also recorded six rebounds and six assists while Luttrull had a career-best seven rebounds with four made 3-pointers.
Adrianna Murphy finished as SEMO's rebounding leader with eight in the contest while adding seven points and four assists. It's the third game in a row that Murphy has finished either leading or co-leading the team in rebounds.
Deja Jones and
Mandy Madden contributed eight points each on Wednesday while combining for 10 rebounds. Southeast recorded its highest shooting percentage since UT Martin (Jan. 14), picking up a 44.6 shooting clip. The Redhawks dominated the boards, outrebounding the Gamecocks 47-30. SEMO's 13 offensive rebounds resulted in 11 second-chance points in the Redhawks' favor. SEMO's 21 turnovers resulted in 20 points off turnovers for Jacksonville State in the game.
Logging Miles, and Wins
With Wednesday's road victory over Jacksonville State, the Redhawks recorded their third conference road win of the season. The last time Southeast had three wins in league play away from the Show Me Center was 2008-09 when SEMO went 4-5 on the road.
Daugherty Named OVC Legend
SEMO women's basketball alumna Sonya Daugherty was one of six women's basketball players named an OVC Legend for 2017. Daugherty was named MVP of the 2007 OVC Tournament after leading Southeast Missouri to a victory over Murray State in the title game. She averaging 19.8 points/game during the team's run and would go on to score 25 points and grab 10 rebounds in a first round NCAA Tournament game against Oklahoma. She finished her career ranked 10th in SEMO history in scoring (1,170 points) and also ranks among all-time Redhawk leaders in 3-pointers made and steals.
In the Home Stretch
The Redhawks have only six regular-season games left on their schedule. Four of those games will take place at the Show Me Center. Southeast will look to turn its home record around in its final games after going 5-6 in Cape this season. SEMO is 1-3 in home OVC games in 2016-17.
Leaving Their Legacy
Southeast's two seniors,
Olivia Hackmann and
Bri Mitchell, are the newest inductees to the Southeast Missouri Women's Basketball 1,000-Point Club. Hackmann scored her 1,000th point on Dec. 31 while Mitchell was inducted on Jan. 21. They are the 17th and 18th all-time members to the club, eighth and ninth of SEMO's Division I era. Sonya Daugherty and Tarina Nixon (2005-09) were the last inducted into the club, also doing it in the same season.
Assisting Milestone
Bri Mitchell dished out her 300th career assist in Wednesday's game at Jacksonville State. Her 301 assists ranks eighth all-time at Southeast. Only six other Southeast Missouri players have recorded 300 assists in their career. Mitchell recorded her first double-digit assist game against Alabama A&M with 12.
Help! I Need Somebody
Sophomore point guard
Adrianna Murphy is 16th in the nation with 137 assists this season. Her 6.0 assists per game ranks 21st. Murphy has had three double-digit assist performances this season including a career-high 14. Her 14-assist game is the sixth most in an NCAA game this season. For the second year in a row, Murphy has cracked the single-season top 10 with 137; she had 144 as a freshman. She is currently nine assists away from entering the career top-10 list as a sophomore.
