Southeast Heats Up
Southeast is on a season-long four-game winning streak and has heated up to win seven of its last 10 contests. The Redhawks concluded January with a 5-3 record, their best mark for any month this year. Southeast's four-game winning streak is its longest since winning five in a row during the 2013-14 campaign.
First in the OVC West
The Redhawks currently share first-place in the Ohio Valley Conference West Division with Murray State. Southeast and MSU have identical 6-3 OVC records, but the Redhawks own the tiebreaker after beating the Racers, 75-74, in Murray on Jan. 26.
On the Road Again
Southeast plays its third-straight road game when it visits Jacksonville State Wednesday. The Redhawks recently snapped a 10-game losing streak outside of Cape Girardeau with their 75-74 win at Murray State (Jan. 26). Southeast is on a two-game road winning streak and goes after its third-straight when it faces Jacksonville State. A win Wednesday would give the Redhawks a three-game road winning streak in Ohio Valley Conference play for the first time since 2004-05 (won at UT Martin, Murray State, Eastern Illinois).
Series History
Jacksonville State holds a 13-6 lead in its all-time series against Southeast. The Gamecocks and Redhawks went 4-4 in the last eight meetings. The away team won each of the last two games of the series. Southeast beat JSU, 69-52, in Jacksonville on Jan. 14, 2015 and JSU beat Southeast, 74-60, on Jan. 13, 2016 in Cape Girardeau.
Back-to-Back-to-Back OVC Freshman of the Week
Guard
Denzel Mahoney was named adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week three times in a row, Jan. 16, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30. A native of Oviedo, Florida, Mahoney averaged 16.5 points, four rebounds and two assists in two games last week. He shot 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field, 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from 3-point range and was a perfect 14-of-14 at the free throw line. Mahoney opened that week with 10 points, two rebounds and an assist in a home victory over Tennessee Tech. Two days later, he scored a season-high 23 points, made three 3-pointers and buried 12-of-12 free throws at UT Martin. Mahoney secured his second-straight OVC Freshman of the Week honor after averaging a team-high 14.5 points per game to go along with five rebounds and one assist per contest. He shot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the field, 50 percent (4-of-8) from 3-point range and 90 percent (9-of-10) at the free throw line. Murray State/Austin Peay Sweep
Southeast took down Murray State (Jan. 26) and Austin Peay (Jan. 28) on the road last week. As a result, the Redhawks swept that road swing for only the second time in school history. Southeast also won at Murray State (84-68) and APSU (108-81) in 2012-13.
