Redhawks Drop Season-Opener
The Redhawks opened their 2016-17 season with an 81-62 loss at Big Ten Conference member Illinois (Nov. 11). Southeast met the Fighting Illini for the third time and first since Dec. 28, 2005. The Redhawks tipped off a season for the 12th-straight year and 16th time in their NCAA Division I era. Southeast is now 9-17 in season-openers as a D-I program.
Welcome to the Club
A total of seven different Redhawks played in their first career Division I game at Illinois (Nov. 11).
Jaylen Benton,
Denzel Mahoney,
Dondre Duffus,
Tahj Eaddy,
Milos Vranes,
Jonathan Dalton and
Daniel Simmons all made their Southeast debuts. Benton and Mahoney each made their first career starts, as well.
Strong Start
The Redhawks stormed out of the gate
knocking down seven of their first 12 field goals at Illinois (Nov. 11). Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference guard
Antonius Cleveland heated up to score Southeast's first eight points of the game. The Redhawks led all the way to the 5:08 mark in the first half before D.J. Williams' layup gave Illinois a 26-25 edge and the Fighting Illini never relinquished their lead from then on.
Vranes Leads Redhawks
Serbian native
Milos Vranes led Southeast with 12 points off the bench at Illinois (Nov. 11). Vranes made a near-perfect 5-of-6 field goals and drained two 3-pointers in 17 minutes. He also collected a game-high three steals and pulled down two rebounds as one of two double-digit scorers for the Redhawks.
10 From Downtown
Southeast buried 10 three-pointer in its season-opener at Illinois (Nov. 11), a feat it accomplished only twice in 29 games a year ago. The Redhawks had no more than treys in 10-straight contests before Friday's contest. Newcomers
Tahj Eaddy (3) and
Milos Vranes (2), along with
Antonius Cleveland (2) each had multiple trifectas.
Double-Digit Streak
Guard
Antonius Cleveland scored double figures in 11-straight games and 18 of his last 19 starts. Cleveland leads the Redhawks with 55 double-digit scoring games and seven double-doubles in his career. He began the 2016-17 campaign with 10 points and scored the Redhawks first eight points of the season at Illinois (Nov. 11).
Countdown to 100
Sunday marks
Antonius Cleveland's 90th game in a Southeast uniform. Cleveland will be in the starting lineup for the 78th time in
his career.
Redhawk Inactives
Ray Kowalski,
Donnie Lewis and
William Tchiengang are currently out. Kowalski had knee surgery and is more than likely a candidate for a medical redshirt. Lewis is a 4-4 transfer and has to sit out the season. Tchiengang is awaiting amateurism clearance from the NCAA Eligibility Center.
