Let's ReviewThe Redhawks picked up a comeback win against Missouri S&T Tuesday. Southeast found themselves down 10-3 in the fourth inning but worked their way back to walk-off in the 10th inning, 11-10. Southeast won their eighth conference series of the season over the weekend with a series sweep of the Murray State Racers.
Joey Lucchesi pitched eight innings in game one against the Racers and struck out a career-high 13 batters. Lucchesi earned OVC Pitcher of the Week for his performance. The Redhawks won that game in extra innings, 10-3. Southeast put up a 10 spot in the first inning of game two en route to a 17-12 win. The sweep was completed with a game three, 10-2, victory.
Â
OVC Pitcher of the Week, AgainJoey Lucchesi earned his second OVC Pitcher of the Week honor this week. Lucchesi pitched eight complete innings against Murray State Friday evening. He struck out a career-high 13 batters in his eight innings of work. He allowed just one run on only three hits. He left the game with a 3-1 lead but suffered a no decision after the Racers tied the game in the ninth inning. A Southeast Missouri pitcher has been named pitcher of the week four of the last five weeks. Lucchesi is the first pitcher in the league to earn the honor twice this season. 2015 has featured the most pitchers of the week since 2007 when Southeast had five.
Â
On Pace to RepeatThe Redhawks are on pace to repeat as the Ohio Valley Conference Regular Season Champions in 2015. Southeast sits at 19-5 in league play with two OVC series left. A year ago, the Redhawks were 19-5 at the very same spot in the season. Southeast has won all eight OVC series this year with sweeps of UT Martin, Jacksonville State, and Murray State. Last year, Southeast had four OVC series sweeps but had a series loss to Morehead State early in conference play. The Redhawks clinched the OVC title during the final conference series of the season at Tennessee Tech. Second-place SIUE is chasing the Redhawks and are 15-9 on the season. The Cougars are playing out of conference this weekend but third-place Morehead State can gain ground on Southeast if they win the remainder of their conference games.
Â
Going StreakingThe Redhawks have a number of active streaks going for them. They are currently riding a four-game winning streak, have won seven straight conference games, have won their last eight home games, and have scored 10 or more runs in their last four wins.
Garrett Gandolfo is currently riding a 12-game hitting streak while
Trevor Ezell and
Dalton Hewitt have 14-game on-base streaks going.
Â
Run, Redhawks, RunSoutheast Missouri ranks fourth in the nation in runs scored (354) and in scoring (8.0 runs a game). Southeast has outscored its opponents 354-229 on the season and has scored 10 or more runs in 17 games this season. Southeast also has a +2.9 scoring margin on their opponents, which ranks 15th in the country.
Â
Digging the Long BallThe Redhawks have won the last nine games in which they have hit a home run. Southeast has hit two or more home runs in 14 games this season. The Redhawks rank second in the OVC in the category with 52; behind Belmont's 56. Nationally, Southeast ranks third in home runs and home runs per game. 16 of Southeast's 52 have been leadoff home runs.
Branden Boggetto leads the team with nine this season.
Â
Looking AheadSoutheast Missouri will close out the regular season with a seven-game road swing beginning with four non-conference games. The Redhawks will take on in-state rival and SEC member Missouri on Tuesday in Columbia, Missouri. The Redhawks will then take their conference bye week at Indiana State next weekend. The Redhawks and Sycamores will play a three-games series in Terre Haute, Indiana.
