CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri allowed eight runs in the fourth inning to Murray State (19-26, 11-13 OVC) Sunday and couldn't overcome the deficit but never gave up trying as Southeast fell 11-6 on senior day.
Southeast's Ohio Valley Conference regular season title will have to wait with the loss to the Thoroughbreds. The Redhawks fall to 31-16, 21-6 OVC and the magic number to clinch the OVC title remains at two.
After falling a single shy of hitting for the cycle in game two, Anthony Bayus blasted a home run in the first inning to put the Thoroughbreds ahead 1-0.
Murray put up an eight-spot in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead on Southeast. The 'Breds sent 12 men to the plate in the inning and plated the eight runs on six hits and one Redhawk error.
Southeast immediately pushed two runs across in the bottom of the inning. Cole Bieser led off the inning with a single. He scored from first on a double that rolled to the right center wall off the bat of Matt Tellor. Southeast scored another on a fielder's choice to make it 9-2.
The Redhawks continued to chip away at the lead in the sixth inning. Tellor and Derek Gibson led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Murray pulled starting pitcher Sheldon Baxter. A single and an error off the bat of Andy Lennington scored Tellor. A sacrifice fly by Dalton Hewitt scored Gibson. Southeast scored one more time on an RBI groundout by Cole Ferguson to narrow the lead to 9-5.
Murray pushed two runs across in the eighth inning on a triple by Tyler Lawrence; 11-5 'Breds.
The Redhawks weren't going to go down quietly as they pushed one run across in the ninth inning but that would be all they would get as Murray avoided the sweep with an 11-6 win over the Redhawks.
Tellor ended his last game at Capaha Park going 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Fellow seniors Gibson and Bieser each recorded two hits on senior day.
Redhawks starter Ryan Lenaburg (3-3) suffered the loss after giving up six runs in three innings of work.
Baxter (2-6) recorded the win for the 'Breds. Baxter pitched five innings, allowing four runs. Tyler Saltsman picked up a four-inning save for Murray Sunday, his first save of the season.
Lawrence finished with three hits and three RBI while three other Murray batters had two hits each.
The Redhawks will take the midweek off and prepare for their final OVC series of the season next weekend at Tennessee Tech.
