Updated BracketGame Eight Post Game Video JACKSON, Tenn. – No. 1 Southeast Missouri dropped game eight of the Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Tournament to No. 2 Tennessee Tech (40-17) Friday, 9-2. Southeast is now 37-19 on the season.
With the loss, the Redhawks fall into the consolation side of the bracket. Southeast will face Jacksonville State at noon Saturday in the game nine elimination game. The winner of game nine will advance to the championship round to face Tennessee Tech at 4 p.m.
Despite suffering the loss Friday evening,
Travis Hayes pitched eight complete innings while striking out a season-best 11 batters on a season-high 135 pitches.
Tyler Brazelton recorded the first Tennessee Tech hit of the game with a one-out double to left. Zach Zarzour reached on an error by
Andy Lennington at third base. A bullet off the bat of Zach Stephens, knocked down by Lennington, loaded the bases. Daniel Miles then plated two runs with a single up the middle. Brandon Thomasson then plated one more to give Tech a 3-0 lead in the third.
Southeast Missouri broke a 14-batter dry spell in the seventh inning and got on the board.
Cole Bieser led off the inning with a walk.
Matt Tellor singled through the right side and Bieser took third on the play. A sacrifice fly by
Derek Gibson scored Bieser and put the Redhawks on the board. Tellor stole second and scored on a single up the middle by
Dalton Hewitt to narrow the Tennessee Tech lead to one run in the seventh, 3-2.
Dylan Bosheers was hit by a pitch with one out in the eighth inning. He then scored on a triple by Jordan Hopkins to widen the lead to 4-2 over Southeast.
Thomasson hit a bases-loaded, two-RBI double in the ninth to extend the lead to 6-2. Bosheers followed it up with a two-RBI single to left to make the score 8-2. A sac fly to right plated Tech's ninth and final run.
The Redhawk bats were cold as Southeast scattered only four hits in the game.
Hayes is now 8-2 on the season with the loss. The Redhawks used three bullpen pitchers in the ninth inning.
Miles finished 3-for-5 with two RBI while Thomasson and Brazelton had two hits each.
Tech starter Evan Fraliex (4-0) earned the win. Fraliex worked seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
No. 1 Southeast Missouri and No. 3 Jacksonville State face off at noon Saturday. Jacksonville State has already played four games in the tournament and is 3-1 on the weekend.
