PDF Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Southeast Missouri put the exclamation point on a terrific season Saturday with a three-game sweep of IPFW (19-34), winning the series finale, 8-6. Southeast swept both series with the Mastodons this season, defeating them a total of six times in 2014.
The Redhawks finish the regular season 36-18. With the conclusion of Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday, the six-team tournament field was set (see below). Southeast Missouri locked up the No. 1 seed when they won the OVC Regular Season Championship. The Redhawks will play the worst seed standing in game five of the tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Ballpark at Jackson in Jackson, Tennessee.
IPFW jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Lucas Salerno grounded out to score the first IPFW run. Malcolm White hit a base hit to left to take a 2-0 lead.
With
Cole Bieser on first and
Jason Blum on third, the Redhawks executed the delayed double steal as Blum swiped home on the catcher's throw down to second to put the Redhawks on the board in the third inning, 2-1 Mastodons.
IPFW extended the lead to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly by Kevin Wirth in the bottom of the inning.
Nolan Fisher hit a sac fly of his own in the top of the next inning to score
Dalton Hewitt and narrow the Mastodon lead to 3-2.
Southeast tied the game with another sacrifice fly in the fifth inning by
Andy Lennington to tie the game at 3-3.
Matt Tellor drove a base hit up the middle to score Blum and put the Redhawks up 4-3 in the top of sixth.
White homered to left center in the sixth to retie the game at 4-4.
Lennington led off the seventh inning with a double to center field. He scored on a one-out double by
Cole Ferguson to take a 5-4 lead.
The Redhawks took a commanding lead in the top of the ninth inning. Fisher drove in Hewitt and Lennington to put Southeast up 7-4. Blum threaded one through the right side to score Fisher to give the Redhawks an 8-4 lead going to the final frame of the game.
IPFW wasn't going down quietly in the ninth as Wirth drove in two runs with a double to right center with no out in the inning.
Perry Middleton came in, recorded two quick outs, and was replaced by
Brady Wright, who recorded the final out of the game and the regular season.
The Mastodons outhit Southeast 15-12 in the series finale.
Every Redhawk in the lineup recorded a hit while Blum, Lennington, and Hewitt all had two hits each. Fisher finished the day with three RBI to lead the team.
Christian Hull recorded the win and improved to 5-2. Hull pitched two innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits. Wright picked up his fifth save of the season after recording the final out of the game.
For the Mastodons, Kristian Gayday and Shane Trevino led the offense with three hits apiece. Wirth finished with three RBI.
Dane Davis (1-6) recorded the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.
