PDF Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Hot off a series win at Tennessee Tech over the weekend, Southeast Missouri dropped a midweek contest to No. 9 Vanderbilt (39-14) Tuesday, 10-4.
Up 4-1, the Commodores posted six runs in the fifth inning to go way out in front of the Redhawks. Southeast is now 33-18 on the season.
"We just couldn't get past the inning where they posted six runs. I thought Garett looked good in the first inning but he hasn't been a long outing guy for us this season and it was a lot to ask of him tonight to come out and start against a team like Vanderbilt," said head coach
Steve Bieser. "A positive from this game was our bench. Down nine runs against a team who has a fantastic pitching staff and see some guys come off the bench to either pitch or get an at bat was great to see. Derek continues to see the ball well and hit it hard. We need to keep him rolling, especially in to next week's tournament."
Vanderbilt jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. A leadoff hit batsman, a single, and a walk knocked starting pitcher
Garret Stockton out of the game, relieved by
Tyler Iago. A sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout put the Commodores up 2-0 after two complete innings.
With runners on first and second with two out in the third inning for Southeast,
Cole Bieser drove a base hit through the left side to score
Dalton Hewitt from second and cut the Commodore lead to 2-1.
Vandy plated another run in the bottom of the inning. Dansby Swanson hit a leadoff double then scored on a line drive base hit to center off the bat of Bryan Reynolds to extend the lead to 3-1.
A sacrifice fly to shallow left scored Vandy's fourth run to make it 4-1 in the fourth inning.
Vanderbilt posted a six-spot in the fifth inning to take a commanding 10-1 lead over Southeast.
Southeast added two runs in the eighth.
Nolan Fisher, pinch-hitting for Bieser, ripped a ground-rule double down the left field line, scoring
Branden Boggetto. An RBI groundout by
Derek Gibson plated another run to make it 10-3 in the eighth.
Southeast Missouri plated one more run in the ninth inning after
John Logan Zink, who doubled to reach and took third on a wild pitch, scored on a groundout by
Clayton Evans, making the score 10-4.
Gibson and Hewitt both had two hits in the game. Gibson also extended his hitting streak to 28 games with a bunt single in the first inning. He has also tied
Matt Tellor for the team lead in RBI with 66. Both Gibson and Tellor are one RBI away from tying the single season RBI record of 67 set back in 1995 by Brian Schaefer.
Stockton (0-1) suffered the loss after only one inning of work. In all, five Redhawk pitchers were used.
Christian Hull highlighted the evening for the pitching staff as he pitched two scoreless innings to close the game, only allowing a hit.
The Commodores narrowly outhit the Redhawks 10-8 and both teams were errorless in the game. Ro Coleman, Swanson, and Reynolds all had two hits in the game. Coleman also drove in three runs.
Walker Buehler (9-2) recorded the win for Vandy. Buehler worked five innings, allowing one run on four hits. Five Commodore pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts of the Redhawks Tuesday.
The 2014 regular season will come to a close with a three-game series at IPFW. The series will be Thursday through Saturday and Southeast will use it as a final tune up before the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament next week. First pitch from Fort Wayne, Indiana Thursday will be at 2 p.m., CT.
