
Tennis Loses to Northeastern State, 5-2

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (9-11) dropped a 5-2 decision against nationally-ranked NCAA Division II Northeastern State (17-4) Friday afternoon at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
Southeast suffered its sixth-straight loss and fourth in a row by a 5-2 score. NSU, which is ranked 31st in the nation, won its 12th-consecutive match.
The Redhawks won both of their points in singles play. Valeriia Nagovitcina defeated Kristina Savchenkov, 6-2, 6-4. Nagovitcina ended a six-match winning streak for Savchenkov who hadn't lost in No. 1 singles since Mar. 17. Melissa Martin then earned her fifth-straight win when she beat Lucia Cerchlanova, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot. Nagovitcina and Martin are both tied for first on the team with 13 singles wins in dual competition this season.
Southeast concludes its season with two more home matches as it jockeys for one of the remaining three Ohio Valley Conference Tournament spots. The Redhawks are presently eighth in the standings and are battling with Jacksonville State, SIU Edwardsville, Eastern Illinois and UT Martin for one of those berths. Southeast will need to beat both Murray State and Austin Peay, and get help from SIUE (must lose out), EIU (must lose twice) and UTM (must lose twice). As of now, Eastern Kentucky, Murray State and Morehead State are in.
The Redhawks play host to Murray State Saturday and Austin Peay Sunday. Both matches are at Noon, CT.
