CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri baseball team lost its first conference series Saturday when they fell to Morehead State (11-11, 4-4 OVC), 6-1. Southeast falls to 13-9 overall, 6-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play and have lost three games in a row, all at home.
With runners on second and third with one out, Cole Bieser grounded out to the shortstop to score Andy Lack and take a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Morehead used three consecutive innings to score two runs each to take the series from the Redhawks.
A two-run Morehead sixth inning put the Eagles out in front. Morehead loaded the bases with three consecutive singles. After the Redhawks got the lead runner at home for the first out of the inning, Tyler Bigler knocked in the tying run on a single through the left side. The go-ahead run scored when Jeff Birkofer took a ball off the arm with bases loaded; 2-1 Morehead in the sixth.
Two runs crossed home in the seventh on a hit and an error by Bieser in center, putting Morehead up 4-1.
In the eighth, the Eagles used their second bases-loaded hit batsman to go up 5-1 when Brady Wright hit Kane Sweeney with the bases juiced. Morehead's final run scored on a sac fly to put them way out in front, 6-1.
Morehead held Southeast to just three hits in the contest. The Eagles scattered 11 hits.
Bieser, Scott Mitchell, and Clayton Evans combined for the Redhawks' three hits. Derek Gibson's 14-game hitting streak was snapped, as well as his 17-game on base streak after going 0-for-4.
Brandon Rawe, Chris Robinson, and Bobby Burns all had two hits for the Eagles Saturday.
Ryan Lenaburg (2-2) suffered the loss. Lenaburg went six and two thirds on the mound, giving up four runs on 10 hits. Lenaburg struck out four Eagle batters and walked only one.
Matt Anderson (1-3) was stellar on the mound for Morehead Saturday. Anderson worked seven and two thirds innings, allowing only one run on three hits. Anderson also struck out eight Redhawk batters in the contest.
Southeast will look to avoid the sweep at home Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Travis Hayes will have the ball for Southeast.
