CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team nabbed a series win against the IPFW (2-4) Mastodons Saturday with a game two victory, 7-6. Southeast Missouri improves to 5-2 on the season and will look to sweep the Mastodons Sunday in the series finale.

The game remained scoreless until the Redhawk half of the third inning.

Matt Tellor put Southeast on the board in the third inning with one big swing of the bat. With Jason Blum on base, Tellor drove a huge home run to right field, putting the Redhawks up 2-0.

Redhawk starter Christian Hull retired 14-straight IPFW batters and had a perfect game going into the fifth inning. After Hull hit IPFW first baseman Shane Trevino with two out, Kristian Gayday tied the game with monster home run of his own.

IPFW took their first lead of the series in the sixth inning. With Travis Hayes on the mound for Hull and runners on first and third with no out, Kevin Wirth drove in the go-ahead run on an RBI single to left. Catcher Steve Lowden followed it up with an RBI single of his own to take a 4-2 on Southeast in the sixth.

Southeast found themselves with two outs early in the bottom of the sixth but that didn't stop a Redhawk rally from happening. Brandon Boggetto hit a two-out double and scored on a double from Blum. IPFW made their second call to the bullpen and brought in Connor Lawhead to face Cole Bieser. Bieser walked, Blum advanced to third on a wild pitch, followed by another walk to Tellor. With bases loaded, Derek Gibson drew a walk to bring home the tying run. With bases still loaded, Andy Lennington hit a high, fly ball to left that was caught by the wind, causing the left fielder to misread the ball and fail to make the third out. Lennington cleared the bases and advanced to third on the play as the left fielder made a throwing error on the throw back to the infield. Southeast went up 7-4 on the Mastodons.

IPFW took one run back in the eighth inning on an RBI groundout by Lowden.

With a two-run lead, Garret Stockton was brought in to close the game out for Southeast in the ninth inning. IPFW was not going down without a fight though as Stockton found himself with runners on the corners with one out. Rightfielder Brandon Soat singled up the middle to narrow the Redhawk lead to 7-6. With the tying run on third, Stockton worked his way out of the ninth inning jam to secure the series win for the Redhawks. Stockton picked up his third save of the season.

The Mastodons outhit Southeast 10-8 in the contest.

Blum and Tellor each recorded two hits for Southeast and both scored two runs.

Reliever Greg Mosel (1-0) picked up his first win in a Redhawk uniform Saturday. Mosel pitched 3.0 innings, giving up only one run on two hits. Mosel fanned five batters and walked none. Hull was one strikeout short of tying his career-high of eight; which was set on Feb. 24, 2012 at home against IPFW.

Connor Lawhead (0-1) suffered the loss after only pitching 0.1 innings.

First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday as the Redhawks go for the sweep of the Mastodons.
