RICHMOND, Ky. – Glenn Cosey scored 20 points and banked in the game-winning three-pointer with one second left to help Eastern Kentucky (16-7, 7-3) escape with a 79-78 victory over Southeast Missouri (12-11, 3-6) Saturday night at McBrayer Arena.
Â
EKU erased a 10-point deficit in the final 3:57, as Cosey's only field goal of the second half sunk the Redhawks.
"I'm proud of our team and I didn't think we deserved to lose tonight," said Southeast head coach
Dickey Nutt. "We came into a very tough place to play and dominated the game, especially in the second half."
Southeast led, 72-62, when the Colonels came alive to outscore the Redhawks 17-6 in the final four minutes. Orlando Williams knocked down a three to ignite the comeback and followed with a jumper. Marcus Lewis then drained a three to cut the Redhawks lead to 72-70 with 2:45 left.
Moments after
Tyler Stone's free throws put Southeast ahead by four, Lewis drove the baseline and threw down a dunk to make it a two-point game again. Two possessions later, Tarius Johnson stole the ball and tipped in Cosey's missed layup at the other end of the court to tie the game at 74-74 with 55 seconds remaining.
Cosey made two free throws with 26 ticks on the clock to tie things up at 76-76 after Southeast grabbed the lead on a
Lucas Nutt jumper. On the Redhawks ensuing possession, Nutt missed a shot, but Stone was there to grab the rebound and score on a tip-in to regain a 78-76 lead for Southeast with just seven seconds.
Cosey took the in-bounds pass and dribbled slightly past midcourt before his desperation three-pointer went in off the glass. EKU did not lead for 15:27 and was behind by double-digits on four occasions prior to the winning shot.
Southeast trailed, 44-37, at halftime, but opened the second half with an 18-5 run to take the lead.
Jarekious Bradley scored seven points to key the surge which ended on a
Paul McRoberts tip-in, giving the Redhawks a 55-49 advantage at the 12:17 mark. Bradley made a three-pointer to give Southeast its first lead since the opening 1:32 of the game during that stretch, as well.
McRoberts' layup gave the Redhawks their largest lead at 63-52 with just under 10 minutes left. Stone completed a conventional three-point play and Nutt made two free throws to get Southeast two more 10-point leads before EKU's late push.
Cosey made 5-of-12 field goals, three 3-pointers and a perfect 7-of-7 free throws to lead the Colonels. After scoring 15 points in the first half, Cosey was held scoreless until the last 26 seconds of the game.
Corey Walden also had 20 points, while Lewis and Johnson followed with 12 and 10, respectively.
In addition, the Colonels made 29-of-36 free throws (80.6 percent).
Bradley dropped in a game and career-high 32 points on 12-of-15 field goals and 5-of-7 at the free throw line. He scored 17 points in the first half en route to his second 30-point performance this season. Additionally, Bradley had a game-high eight rebounds, two assists, three blocks and three steals.
"Jarekious was really good and they simply had no answer for him," said Nutt.
Stone chipped in 15 points and Nutt added 13 points and five assists.
Southeast outscored EKU, 41-35, in the second half and shot 56 percent (28-of-50) from the field on the night.
The Redhawks resume Ohio Valley Conference West Division play when they visit SIU Edwardsville on Feb. 6.
