Home-and-Home RenewedSoutheast and Southern Illinois renewed their home-and-home series this year. The Redhawks and Salukis meet in Cape Girardeau in 2014-15 before Southeast returns the trip to Carbondale next season. These teams last did a home-and-home series during
Dickey Nutt's first two years as Southeast's head coach in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
Series HistoryThis year marks the 114th meeting between Southeast and Southern Illinois on the hardwood. The Salukis currently own a 69-44 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1913-14. SIU owns a five-game winning streak in the series and swept the Redhawks the last time these teams did a home-and-home series. The Salukis beat Southeast, 86-65, in Cape Girardeau on Dec. 9, 2009, and, 83-68, in Carbondale on Dec. 8, 2010. The Redhawks, who last beat the Salukis on Dec. 5, 2000 (87-84 in Carbondale), are 1-12 against SIU since they joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1991-92.
Missouri Valley FoesSoutheast closes out a three-game homestand with two Missouri Valley Conference opponents this week. After Wednesday's matchup, the Redhawks welcome Missouri State on Dec. 13. The Redhawks are 103-183 all-time against the MVC. That record includes a 44-69 mark against SIU, 0-1 record vs. Drake, 3-9 record vs. Evansville, 2-6 mark vs. Bradley, 1-7 record vs. Illinois State, 0-2 record vs. Indiana State and a 53-89 mark vs. Missouri State. Longtime FriendsDickey Nutt and Barry Hinson have been friends for more than 30 years. They first met at Oklahoma State when Nutt was a player and Hinson was an up-and-coming coach, and have followed each other since. Both are close friends with Kansas head coach Bill Self, who Hinson once worked with.

Dickey Nutt and Barry Hinson meet as NCAA Division I head coaches. Prior to this year, Nutt faced Hinson-coached teams five times when he was the head coach at Arkansas State. Nutt is 1-4 in those contests, losing to Hinson's Missouri State clubs in 2002-03 and 2005-06 (0-2), and splitting a pair of games against Oral Roberts with Hinson at the helm in 1998-99. Nutt's lone win against Hinson was a 74-72 victory at Oral Roberts in 1998-99.
Southeast TiesThird-year Southern Illinois assistant coach Anthony Beane Sr. broke into the college coaching ranks with a three-year run at Southeast from 1997-2000. Beane was part of back-to-back 20-win seasons and helped the Redhawks go 24-9 overall and advance to their only NCAA Tournament in 1999-2000. Beane was inducted into the Southeast Athletics Hall of Fame with the 1999-2000 team in 2012.
Home Sweet HomeSoutheast owns a six-game winning streak at home dating back to last season. The Redhawks ended the 2013-14 campaign with wins in each of their final three home contests and enter Wednesday's contest currently undefeated (3-0) at the Show Me Center. Southeast beat Hannibal-LaGrange, 86-49, on Nov. 18, Alabama A&M, 85-51, on Nov. 29 and Southeastern Louisiana, 63-59, on Dec. 2 this season. The Redhawks are among six Ohio Valley Conference schools without a home loss this year.
OVC HeavySoutheast is the fourth Ohio Valley Conference school on Southern Illinois' non-league slate. The Salukis have faced an OVC opponent in each of their last two games, winning at SIU Edwardsville (79-67) on Dec. 3 and vs. Austin Peay (71-49) on Dec. 6. SIU also won at Tennessee State (84-67) on Nov. 18. In all, the Salukis play five games against OVC foes this year. Tennessee State (Dec. 16) and Murray State (Dec. 22) will face SIU later this month.
Rebounding AdvantageThe Redhawks pulled down a season-high 50 rebounds in their latest win against Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 6). Southeast held a +22 margin (50-28) on the boards. It marked the fourth time in six games where the Redhawks outrebounded their opponent. Additionally, Southeast had 50 rebounds in a game against a Division I foe since Jan. 26, 2012 (50, vs. Austin Peay).

Stetson Hairston was a four-year starter for Southern Illinois from 2001-05. The Salukis won four Missouri Valley Conference titles, made four NCAA Division I Tournament appearances and produced a record of 104-28 with Hairston on the roster. He finished his career with over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, while earning a pair of All-Conference and All-Defense awards. Â
Bradley Brings ItSoutheast's leading scorer,
Jarekious Bradley pitched in double figures in six-straight starts since returning from a quad contusion injury. Bradley, who averages 17.2 points a game, began the year by scoring 15 vs. Hannibal-LaGrange (Nov. 18) and 20 at Central Arkansas (Nov. 22). He turned in his first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 boards at Bowling Green (Nov. 25) and followed that up with 17 points vs. Alabama A&M (Nov. 29) and 12 at Missouri (Dec. 2). Most recently, Bradley had a game-high 21 points vs. Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 6). He leads the Redhawks with 15 three-pointers made and is 16-of-18 at the free throw line, as well. He has scored double figures in seven-consecutive games dating back to last season. Bradley enters the week ranked fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring and third in free throw percentage (.889).
Bradley Clears 700Jarekious Bradley's latest 21-point effort vs. Southeastern Louisiana put him over 700 points in his two-year Southeast career. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Bradley currently has 711 points in 38 games and 31 starts as a Redhawk. He owns a career scoring average of 18.7 points per game.
Block PartyNino Johnson leads Southeast with 19 blocks through eight starts this year. He had three or more swats in four of his last five contests. Johnson is also second in the Ohio Valley Conference, averaging 2.4 blocks per game.
Cleveland Ends Three-Point SkidAntonius Cleveland opened the season without a three-pointer in his first seven starts. Cleveland snapped a 0-of-12 skid from distance when he knocked down a trey with 5:40 left in the first half vs. Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 6). He ranks third on the team in scoring and has put up double-digits in each of his last two outings. As a team, Southeast is 11th in the Ohio Valley Conference in three-point field goal percentage (.280).
Defense ImprovesSoutheast ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring defense, allowing 62.1 points per game. The Redhawks are also forcing over 15 turnovers per contest.
Thompson DeliversPoint guard
J.J. Thompson scored double figures in back-to-back games for the first time in his Southeast career. Thompson dropped in 11 points at Missouri (Dec. 2) and vs. Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 6). He shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the field and dished out eight assists in that span.
Langford Expected to PlayJosh Langford is expected to play against Southern Illinois Wednesday. Langford missed the Redhawks game vs. Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 6) with a knee injury. He hurt his left knee late in Southeast's loss at Missouri (Dec. 2).
About Southern IllinoisSouthern Illinois enters Wednesday's game on a four-game winning streak and is coming off a recent 71-49 home win over Austin Peay. The Salukis are led by Anthony Beane, son of current SIU and former Southeast assistant coach Anthony Beane Sr. Beane ranks third in the Missouri Valley Conference and 25th in the nation with 19.8 points per game. The Salukis also have two of the MVC's top-five rebounders in Sean O'Brien and Jordan Caroline. O'Brien is fourth with 6.5 rebounds per game, while Caroline ranks fifth with 6.4. Caroline has a league-best 25 offensive rebounds, as well. As a team, SIU ranks third in the MVC in three-point field goal percentage defense (.329) and second in steals (7.1 spg).
