MURRAY, Ky. – Southeast Missouri dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Murray State Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field in Murray, Ky. The Thoroughbreds scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on their way to the win as they earned the series win over the Redhawks.
The Redhawks drop to 21-27 on the season and 12-14 in the OVC as Murray State moves to 20-27 and 8-15 in the conference.
Southeast Starter
Will Spitzfaden was solid once again going 6.1 innings allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Jason Blum led the Southeast offensive attack with a pair of doubles and two RBI .
Dalton Hewitt also added a pair of hits for Southeast.
Murray State got on the board first as Brandon Eggenschweiler drove in the opening run on an RBI single through the right side as Ty Stetson scored on the play after reaching on a hit by pitch.
The Redhawks got on the board in the top of the second inning as
Ryan Barnes scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
The 'Breds took the lead back on an RBI single through the right side by Paul Ritzheimer on a similar play that gave Murray State the early lead.
Southeast took their first lead of the weekend in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run double to right field by Blum as the Murray State outfielder lost the ball in the sun as two runs scored on the bases loaded hit.
Murray State tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning on back-to-back doubles by Rick Linton and Dylan Wheeler.
The Redhawks took the lead back in the top of the ninth inning on a wild pitch as
Derek Gibson scored to give Southeast a 4-3 lead.
Murray State tied the game at 4-4 in the ninth inning on a single by Ritzheimer up the middle. The 'Breds scored the game-winning run later in the frame with the bases loaded as Boggetto threw a runner out at home, but the runner slid into catcher
Alex Burridge as the ball went into right field allowing the winning run to score.
Bobby Hurst (3-3) was tagged with the loss allowing two runs with one being earned.
Shelden Baxter got the win going two thirds of an inning out of the 'Breds bullpen.
Wheeler and Ritzheimer led Murray State as they each went 3-for-4 at the plate.
