CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri dropped their Ohio Valley Conference regular season finale to Tennessee Tech, 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Capaha Field. The Redhawks were outhit nine to three in the contest as they are now 22-30 on the season and 13-17 in the OVC as the Golden Eagles are now 36-14 and 22-5 in the conference.
“Their starter threw very well today and they played great defense,” said head coach
Steve Bieser.
Southeast starter
Zack Smith was tagged with the loss going 2.2 innings allowing four runs on seven hits. Southeast freshmen
Alex Siddle and
Alex Winkelman were solid in relief as they combined for 5-1 innings of relief allowing two hits an one earned run.
“Siddle and Winkelman did a great job for us today and they are getting better as we go down the home stretch of the season,” said Bieser.
Tech starter Jacob Honea (3-1) went seven innings allowing an earned run on three hits with five strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on four hits. Zach Stephens drove in a run on a sacrifice fly as TTU later added a run on a wild pitch. They extended their lead to 4-0 in third inning with a solo home run by Stephens and an RBI single by Dylan Bosheers.
The Golden Eagles expanded their lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Zach Zarzour.
The Redhawks got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning as
Matt Tellor drove in
Derek Gibson on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Gibson opened the inning with a walk and advanced to third base on a single by
Dalton Hewitt.
Both bullpen battled from their with Seth Lucio closing out the game for the Golden Eagles as they earned the win 5-1.
Daniel Miles and Bosheers led TTU as they both went 2-for-5 on the afternoon.
The Redhawks were led offensively by Gibson as he went 1for-3 with a walk and run scored.
The Redhawks return to action on Thursday as they open up a weekend non-conference set with Conference USA foe Memphis.
