CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri dropped an 11-6 decision to Tennessee Tech Saturday evening at Capaha Field. The Golden Eagles were one hit until they scored nine runs in the top of the fifth inning on their way to the win as they earn the series victory over the Redhawks.
The Redhawks fall to 22-29 on the season and 13-16 in the Ohio Valley Conference as Tennessee Tech the OVC Leader moves to 35-14 overall and 21-5 in the OVC.
Southeast was led by
Matt Tellor as he went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.
Jason Blum,
Clayton Evans and
Derek Gibson added a pair of hits for the Redhawks on the night.
Tennessee outhit the Redhawks 16-13 on the night as they were led by James Abraham as he went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Will Spitzfaden (5-4) was tagged with the loss going 4.1 innings allowing six earned runs.
Tony Zerrusen saw time out of the Southeast bullpen going 4.2 innings.
David Hess (6-2) got the win for TTU going 3.2 innings out of the bullpen allowing four hits with six strikeouts as he relieved starter Ross Spurgeon.
The Redhawks got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as Tellor hit an RBI double into the right field corner scaring
Dalton Hewitt, who reached on a walk to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles recorded a big inning in the top of the fifth frame with nine runs on nine hits. TTU recorded five consecutive hits to open the inning as the jumped out to a 9-1 lead on Southeast.
Southeast Missouri added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on five hits. Hewitt drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly.
Ryan Barnes and
Clayton Evans added RBI singles through the right side in the frame to cut the TTU lead to 9-4.
Tennessee Tech added a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Abraham to give TTU a 10-4 lead. Dylan Bosheers added an RBI single in the eighth inning that extended the Golden Eagles lead to 11-4.
Southeast Missouri made a brief comeback bid in the bottom of the ninth inning as
Josh Meade drove in two-runs on a double down the left field line to make it 11-6, but it wasn't enough as the Redhawks fell 11-6.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Capaha Field. Sunday's contest will also feature a Redhawks Baseball Tailgate.
