Redhawks Take Series With 13-11 Comeback Win Over SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Southeast Missouri erased a 7-1 deficit after two innings on their way to a 13-11 comeback win over SIUE Sunday afternoon in Edwardsville, Ill. Junior Matt Tellor hit two home runs including what proved to be the game winner as the Redhawks took the weekend series against the Cougars.
 
The Redhawks improve to 17-16 overall and 9-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference as SIUE drops to 8-18 overall and 6-9 in the OVC.
 
Each team combined for 28 hits as each team recorded 14 on the day. The Cougars and Redhawks also combined for five home runs on the day and 13 extra base hits.
 
The Cougars struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Devin Caldwell hit a two-run home run to left field to give SIUE a 2-0 lead to open the contest.
 
The Redhawks battled back to cut the SIUE lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning. Freshman Branden Boggetto drove in Ryan Barnes on an RBI double to right centerfield to open Southeast's scoring.
 
The Cougars added five runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning to take a 7-1 lead. Four of the five runs in the frame came with two outs.
 
Southeast cut into the SIUE lead with a pair of runs on a failed pickoff attempt in the top of the third inning as Cole Bieser and Jason Blum scored on the play.
 
After SIUE extended their lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the third the Redhawks responded with three runs in the top of the fourth. Boggetto plated Barnes once again with a triple to open up the scoring.
 
The Redhawks also added runs on a bases loaded walk and a double play, but failed to tie the contest in the frame.
 
After exchanging runs the Redhawks took their first lead of the contest on a three-run homer to left centerfield by Matt Tellor to give the Redhawks a 10-9 lead. SIUE was quick to respond as Joel Greatting hit a solo home run to left field on the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 10-10.
 
Dalton Hewitt gave the Redhawks the lead at 11-10 in the top of the seventh inning scoring on an RBI single from Jason Blum as Hewitt laced his second consecutive double to get in scoring position.
 
In a mirror image of the sixth inning SIUE tied the game on a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning by James Vasquez.
 
Southeast took the lead back in the top of the eighth on a two-run shot over the left field fence by Tellor. The first baseman hit a foul ball the previous pitch that was just foul and over the fence.
 
Tony Zerrusen and Bobby Hurst shut the door on SIUE in the final two innings as Hurst earned his fifth save of the season. Michael Patman (1-0) got the win going two thirds of an inning.
 
Six Redhawks recorded multi-hit contests. Blum led the Redhawks with three hits reaching base five times on the day. Tellor added five RBI and two runs scored.
 
Boggetto added two extra base hits with two RBI and two runs scored.
 
Tony Schaeffer (1-2) got the loss throwing the final four innings allowing four runs.
 
Greatting led SIUE offensively going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI.
 
Southeast Returns to action on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. as they host regional rival SIUE at Capaha Field. Tuesday will be the first Redhawks Baseball Tailgate.
