Quick Tips
Southeast Missouri Heads to Rival Murray State Saturday
Southeast Missouri (15-15, 7-8) travels to rival Murray State (20-8, 10-5) for its regular-season finale Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., CT, at the CFSB Center.
Redhawks Get No. 6 Seed
A day after Southeast locked up a spot in this year's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, the Redhawks grabbed the No. 6 seed after beating Austin Peay, 108-81, Thursday. The top-six seeds are now set and include No. 1 Belmont, No. 2 Murray State, No. 3 Eastern Kentucky, No. 4 Tennessee State, No. 5 Morehead State and No. 6 Southeast Missouri. The Redhawks will open postseason play versus the to be determined No. 7 seed in the first round of the OVC Tournament on Mar. 6. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 8 p.m., CT, at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium.
Let's Talk Scenarios
There is a chance Southeast could face either Eastern Illinois, UT Martin or SIU Edwardsville in its first-round Ohio Valley Conference Tournament matchup next week. If SIUE and UT Martin win Saturday, each would finish at 6-10, and the Skyhawks would be the No. 7 seed based on their 2-0 series win against SIUE. If Eastern Illinois and UT Martin win, then they are both 6-10. Eastern Illinois owns a 2-0 series record versus the Skyhawks and would go as the No. 7 seed in that case. If Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin are tied at 5-11, SIUE would be the seven-seed. There are also two more scenarios where Eastern Illinois could finish seventh.
Record-Setters
Southeast broke a single-game school record and Ohio Valley Conference record when it made 20 three- pointers in a 108-81 win at Austin Peay (Feb. 28). The Redhawks shot 60.6 percent (20-of-33) from three-point range and drained 13 of their treys in the first half. Southeast made its first eight three-pointers of the game. The 20 threes are the most any team has made against an NCAA Division I opponent in league history. Jacksonville State had the previous OVC record with 19 three-pointers vs. Tennessee Temple during the 2007-08 season.
Southeast Ties NCAA Single-Game Mark
The Redhawks also tied this year's NCAA Division I single-game record with their 20 three-pointers at Austin Peay (Feb. 28). UNC Greensboro was the other to make 20 threes (vs. Chattanooga on Feb. 21).
Series History
Saturday marks the 66th meeting between rivals Southeast Missouri and Murray State. The Racers own a 47-18 record in the all-time series. Murray State won 11 of the last 12 meetings between these teams, with its only loss coming in Cape Girardeau (64-57, Feb. 16, 2011) during that time. The Racers have won three in a row against the Redhawks, including a 74-66 victory on Jan. 5. That game was televised on ESPNU. Southeast has lost in five-straight trips to Murray, last beating the Racers on their homecourt in 2006-07 (96-85).
Top of the West Division
Murray State and Southeast each finish the regular-season exactly where they were picked, first and second in the Ohio Valley Conference West Division, respectively. The Racers (10-5) claimed the West Division and will go to the league's postseason tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Redhawks follow with a 6-8 conference record.
The Streak is Over!
Southeast ended a 14-game losing streak in Clarksville with its 108-81 rout of Austin Peay (Feb. 28). The Redhawks had lost 13-straight regular-season games and one Ohio Valley Conference Tournament matchup during that stretch. It was Southeast's longest road losing streak against any OVC opponent.
Cracking 100
The Redhawks scored a season-high 108 points at Austin Peay (Feb. 28), marking the first time they put up 100 points in a game this season. Southeast last scored 100 or more points in an Ohio Valley Conference road game Tennessee State (L, 105-101) on Jan. 13, 2005. The 108 points are the second-most in a game under head coach
Dickey Nutt behind the Redhawks 116 points vs. Williams Baptist College on Dec. 12, 2009.
Torching the Nets
Southeast knocked down 10 or more three-pointers in five-straight games. The Redhawks shot over 53 percent from three-point range in the first half en route to building halftime leads in each of those contests. Southeast also boosted its three-point field goal percentage by 40 points (.360 to .400) during that stretch. The Redhawks shot a combined 70-of-130 for a blazing 53.8 percent from downtown in their last five games alone.
Wilford Goes Off
Corey Wilford made his first six three-pointers and scored 26 points to lead a season-high six Redhawks with double figures in the scoring column at Austin Peay (Feb. 28). Wilford shot 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the field and made a career-high 8-of-12 threes. He scored 20 points in the first 11 minutes of the game. It marked the sixth time Wilford scored 20+ points in a game this season. He leads Southeast and ranks fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference with 75 three-point field goals made this season. Wilford also rates fifth in the league in three-point field goal percentage (.439).
Simply Unconscious
The Redhawks virtually couldn't miss against Austin Peay (Feb. 28), especially in the first half. Southeast caught fire to shoot 73.5 percent (25-of-34) from the field and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from behind the arc en route to scoring 65 points in the game's opening period against the Governors. Three players, including
Corey Wilford (20 pts.),
Nick Niemczyk (16 pts.) and
Tyler Stone (15 pts.) were in double figures by halftime.
Southeast Moves to Ninth in the Nation in Three-Point Field Goal Percentage
Southeast leads the Ohio Valley Conference and now ranks ninth in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (.400, 233-of-583). The Redhawks also rank among the top-50 teams in the nation in points scored (15th, 2,215), scoring offense (45th, 73.8 ppg), field goal percentage (34th, .469), three-point field goals per game (39th, 7.8), assists per game (24th, 15.4), assist/turnover ratio (47th, 1.2) and blocked shots (38th, 4.9 bpg). Individually,
Corey Wilford is 19th in the country in three-point field goal percentage (.439) and
Nino Johnson is 21st in blocks (2.6 avg.) as of Feb. 28.
500th Game
Dickey Nutt will coach his 500th career game when Southeast takes the court at Murray State Saturday. Nutt is 236-263 in nearly 17 years as an NCAA Division I head coach. He has coached a total of 123 games (47-76) at Southeast.
Southeast Gets 15th Win
The Redhawks picked up their 15th win at Austin Peay (Feb. 28), and as a result, tied their most victories in a season under head coach
Dickey Nutt. Southeast also won 15 games a year ago. The last time the Redhawks won 15 or more games in back-to-back seasons was 1999-2000 (24-7) and 2000-01 (18-12).
