CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team fell to North Dakota State 9-6 on Saturday afternoon at Capaha Field. The Bison (3-2) outhit the Redhawks (5-2) 16 to 12 in the contest.
“We just got off to a slow start and the tempo just wasn't there for us,” said interim head coach Steve Bieser.
Alex Winkelman was tagged with the loss for the Redhawks allowing two earned runs in 1.1 innings of work out of the Redhawk bullpen.
Junior Matt Tellor led the Redhawks going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored including his first home run at Southeast.
The Bison got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning on three straight singles.
Southeast tied the contest in the bottom of the first inning as Andy Lennington extended his hitting streak to nine games dating back to last season with an RBI infield single.
NDSU added a run in the second inning and held a 2-1 lead until the fourth inning as Southeast recorded three runs to take their first lead of the contest at 4-2. Sophomore Ryan Barnes highlighted the inning with a two-run single as Cole Bieser added an RBI single later in the frame.
North Dakota State added six runs to take an 8-4 lead on the Redhawks as NDSU used three runs in their charge to take the lead.
Southeast responded with a brief rally in the bottom of the seventh inning after Tellor hit his first home run as a Redhawk to right field to cut the NDSU lead to 8-6.
But the Bison responded with an insurance run in the eighth on their way to a 9-6 win.
David Ernst (1-1) earned the win going six innings allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Kyle Kingsley picked up the save throwing the final 1.2 innings.
Lennington and Bieser finished the day with 2-for-5 with an RBI as Bieser added a run scored.
Starter Zack Smith went four innings allowing four runs with four walks and four strikeouts. Tony Zerrusen and Alex Siddle also made appearances.
Jon Hechtner led the Bison going 3-for-5 with a run socred. Seven Bison players had multi-hit performances.
The two teams wrap up their weekend series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Sophomore Will Spitzfaden will toe the rubber for Southeast.
