CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team scattered double digit hits (12) for the third consecutive game in a 9-1 win over Mid-Continent Wednesday afternoon at Capaha Field.
“We over came some unfortunate weather today and played a compete nine inning game,” said interim head coach Steve Bieser.
Junior Hank Williams, Jr. (1-0) picked up the win in his return after missing most of 2012 with an injury. Williams, Jr. went four innings allowing one hit with one strikeout as Redhawk pitching allowed only three hits on the day.
“It was great to see Hank out there as he really competed well today,” said Bieser.
Freshman Clayton Evans led the Redhawks offensively going 2-for-3 with three RBI to go along with two diving defensive plays in right field. Matt Tellor was 2-for-5 in his Southeast debut with two RBI and two runs scored.
“Clayton really energized the team today with great defense and offense, he got the team excited today,” said Bieser.
The Redhawks added three runs in the opening frame. Evans highlighted the inning with a two-run double to left centerfield that scored Andy Lennington and Derek Gibson.
Southeast added four runs in the second inning on four hits as the Redhawks capitalized on two Mid-Continent errors.
Tellor recorded his first RBI as a Redhawk with a two-run single through the right side to make it 5-0. Lennington followed with an RBI double down the left field line scoring Tellor.
Derek Gibson added an RBI on a single through the right side as he now has an RBI in the first five games of the season.
Southeast added two runs in the fourth inning to cap their offensive day. Evans and Lennington drove in runs to highlight the inning.
Mid-Continent scored their only run of the contest in the sixth inning as Richard Arias drove in a run on a Redhawk error.
Cole Bieser had another solid game at the plate with three runs scored on three hits. Gibson added a pair of hits and a run scored.
Senior Ryan Kendall threw two innings of relief giving up an unearned run.
Trevor Kill, Jason Blum and Michael Patman each threw an inning of scoreless relief out of the Southeast bullpen.
The Redhawks return home on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Capaha Field as they host North Dakota State in the opening game of a three game set.
