Quick Tips
Redhawks Second in OVC West
Southeast picked up two big home wins last week, and as a result, moved back to second in the Ohio Valley Conference West Division standings. The Redhawks beat SIU Edwardsville, 76-67, on Feb. 7 and Eastern Illinois, 77-64, on Feb. 9 to end a three-game losing skid. Southeast is on a winning streak for the first time since starting its OVC season with victories over UT Martin (Dec. 29) and Austin Peay (Jan. 3).
Nine To Go
Nino Johnson is nine blocks away from breaking Southeast's all-time single-season record. Johnson leads the Redhawks, ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference and 23rd in the nation with 67 blocked shots this season. He is averaging 2.5 per game and gathered 10 swats -- including a career-high seven vs. SIUE -- last week. Johnson is chasing Bud Eley's current record of 75 blocks in 1998-99. Additionally, Johnson ranks sixth all-time with 75 career blocks at Southeast.
What a Week!
Marland Smith had a breakout week as Southeast wrapped up its Ohio Valley Conference home schedule with a pair of wins. A native of Little Rock, Ark., Smith knocked down 12 three-pointers in two starts. He began the week by breaking Southeast's all-time career record in three-pointers made when he scored 13 points and went 3-of-4 from behind the arc against SIU Edwardsville (Feb. 7). Two days later, Smith erupted for a season-high 29 points and tied a Southeast single-game record nine threes against Eastern Illinois. He shot a scorching 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the field against the Panthers. Smith, who now has 229 career three-pointers, surpassed Derek Winans (219 from 2001-05) for the school's new mark. Smith finished his red-hot week by shooting 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the field and 62.3 percent (12-of-19) from three-point range, averaging 21 points per game.
Smith Sets to Crack OVC List
Marland Smith, Southeast's all-time career leader in three-point field goals attempted, needs to shoot just one more three to place himself among the Ohio Valley Conference's top-10 career leaders in that category. Smith has attempted 657 three-pointers since joining the Redhawks in 2009-10. Here is that list:
830 Joe Sibbitt, APSU (1994-98)
775 Matt Witt, EKU (2002-06)
763 DeWayne Powell, UTM (1992-96)
736 Maze Stallworth, MOR (2006-10)
704 Henry Domercant, EIU (2000-03)/Marquis Weddle, UTM (2007-10)
683 Mike Rose, EKU (2005-09)
675 Todd Babington, APSU (2004-08)
662 Nick Stapleton, APSU (1998-02)
658 Jamie Roberts, TSU (1997-00)
657
Marland Smith, SEMO (2009-present)
Active Redhawks
Marland Smith ranks among the Ohio Valley Conference's active career leaders in several categories, including points (6th, 1,318), rebounds (8th, 415), assists (7th, 227), steals (9th, 103) and three-pointers made (3rd, 229).
Nino Johnson (6th, 75) and
Tyler Stone (7th, 70) also rank on the league's active career list in blocked shots.
Back on Top
Southeast is back on top of the Ohio Valley Conference in field goal percentage defense, where it has been consistently among the best teams in that category all season. The Redhawks are holding their opponents to 40.2 percent (648-of-1610) from the field through 26 games. Southeast has held its opponent under 40 percent from the field in 15 contests.
Series History
The Redhawks are 43-26 all-time against UT Martin. Southeast is 24-18 versus the Skyhawks since moving to the NCAA Division I level. The Redhawks won five of the last seven meetings between these teams and opened Ohio Valley Conference play with a 65-60 victory over UTM on Dec. 29.
Tight Race
Southeast (5-7) enters Saturday's matchup holding a slight one-game lead over SIU Edwardsville (4-7), UT Martin (4-8) and Eastern Illinois (4-8) in the Ohio Valley Conference West Division standings. The Skyhawks heated up to win three of their last four contests. Two of those wins were in Martin, Tenn.
Close Call
Two of Southeast's games at UT Martin have been decided by three or less points. The Skyhawks overcame a 17-point deficit to sneak by the Redhawks, 73-70, on Feb. 9, 2010. Two years later,
Marcus Brister scored the game-winning basket on a layup with 12 seconds left to give Southeast a 73-71 win on Jan. 5, 2012.
Bombs Away
Southeast buried a season-high 15 three-pointers to fuel its 77-64 win over Eastern Illinois (Feb. 9). The Redhawks shot a scorching 57.7 percent (15-of-26) from downtown and drained nine of their threes in the first half.
Marland Smith tied a Southeast single-game record with nine three-pointers and
Corey Wilford added four to pave the way against the Panthers. It marked the sixth time where the Redhawks have finished with 10 or more threes in a game this season.
Tough Stretch Ahead
Southeast hits the road for its final four Ohio Valley Conference games. Southeast visits UT Martin (Feb. 16), Jacksonville State (Feb. 20), Austin Peay (Feb. 28) and OVC West Division leader Murray State (Mar. 2) during that stretch. The Redhawks (0-4) and Governors (0-5) are the only OVC teams without a conference road win this year. Southeast is on a six-game conference road losing streak dating back to 2011-12. The Redhawks last OVC road win was at SIU Edwardsville (85-72) on Feb. 11, 2012.
