Final Tune-Up
Southeast and Missouri State meet in their final contest starting conference play. The Redhawks open their 16-game Ohio Valley Conference slate at Murray State and the Bears host Illinois State in their Missouri Valley Conference-opener on Jan. 2.
Series History
The Redhawks and Bears meet for the 143rd time in Springfield this weekend. Missouri State owns an 88-54 advantage in the all-time series, which ranks as Southeast's third-longest in program history. These teams last met in Cape Girardeau on Dec. 21, 2002. The Redhawks won that game, 70-53. Central Missouri (155 games) and Truman State (145 games) round out Southeast's top-three longest series.
Keep it in State
Missouri State is the second of three Division I in-state opponents the Redhawks face this season. Southeast opened its 2013-14 campaign at Saint Louis (Nov. 8). The Redhawks later host UMKC on Jan. 29. This is the first year Southeast plays all three of these Missouri schools in the same season under head coach
Dickey Nutt.
Another Win . . .
Would give Southeast a 9-4 record, its best in a calendar year under head coach
Dickey Nutt. The Redhawks went 9-6 prior to Jan. 1 last season. Southeast would secure a winning record in December for the second-straight season with a victory over the Bears Sunday.
Big Comeback
Southeast never led in regulation, but used a 15-5 run to erase a 10-point deficit in the final 4:33 against IUPUI on Dec. 23. The Redhawks trailed, 67-57, before coming from behind to send the game to overtime. Southeast then took its first lead on
Jamaal Calvin's conventional three-point play with 4:45 left in OT. The Redhawks made a perfect 7-of-7 free throws in the final period to put the game away.
Mr. Clutch
Three days after officially joining the team as a walk-on,
Paul McRoberts scored his first points when he drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 72-72 with 36 seconds left in regulation against IUPUI (Dec. 23). A native of St. Louis, McRoberts splashed in a three from the left corner off a
Jarekious Bradley pass. He also had a rebound and two steals during Southeast's ferocious comeback.
Bradley and Stone Double Up
Cousins
Jarekious Bradley and
Tyler Stone each finished with a double-double in Southeast's latest effort against IUPUI (Dec. 23). Bradley had a game-high 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Stone followed with 15 points and a game-high 15 boards. Stone (4) and Bradley (3) have combined for seven double-doubles this season.
Free Throws Key Win
Southeast shot a season-low 37.3 percent (28-of-75) from the field in its 83-79 overtime victory over IUPUI (Dec. 23). The Redhawks, however, made 20-of-28 free throws, including a perfect 7-of-7 in overtime to make up for it. Southeast's 20 free throws were second-most in a game this season.
Jarekious Bradley sunk a season-high 11-of-12 free throws to lead the way.
Nice Improvement
The Redhawks had a season-low seven turnovers against IUPUI (Dec. 23). That came just two days after Southeast committed 19 at Memphis. The Redhawks are averaging under 12 turnovers (11.9) per game, currently second-fewest in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Where Southeast Ranks
Southeast ranks 19th in the nation in scoring offense (83.7 ppg) and 21st in assists per game (16.5). The Redhawks, who lead the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring, put up 80 points six times and surpassed 100 points on four occasions this season.Â
Bradley Second in OVC in Scoring
Junior guard/forward
Jarekious Bradley leads the team and ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring with 20.1 points per game. Bradley opened his Southeast career with 20-point efforts in seven of his first nine starts. He was named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week once (Nov. 11) and Newcomer of the Week five times (Nov. 11, Nov. 25, Dec. 2, Dec. 9, Dec. 16) this year. Bradley became the first Southeast player to win both of those awards in the same week. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Bradley registered a double-double 22 points and 12 rebounds in his first career start at Saint Louis (Nov. 8). He shot 10-of-17 from the field, hitting 58.8 percent of his field goals in that game. Bradley also knocked down two three-pointers, added two blocks and collected four steals in 38 minutes against the Billikens. He scored nine of the Redhawks first 13 points at Saint Louis and made a jumper that gave Southeast a 35-34 halftime edge. Three days later, Bradley added a game-high 21 points vs. Central Baptist College (Nov. 11). More recently, he scored 26 points at Ball State (Nov. 18), 21 vs. Mid-Continent (Nov. 22), 23 vs. Tulane (Nov. 30), 20 vs. Texas State (Dec. 1), 20 at Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 7), a season-high 28 vs. Illinois-Chicago (Dec. 14) and 27 vs. IUPUI (Dec. 23).
