CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -
Paul McRoberts came off the bench to drain a game-tying three-pointer with 36 seconds left in regulation, as Southeast Missouri (8-4) pulled off a thrilling 83-79 overtime victory over IUPUI (4-11) Monday night at the Show Me Center.
Southeast never led in regulation, but made a ferocious comeback to send the game to overtime.
"Everything that could go wrong went wrong for our team tonight," said Southeast head coach
Dickey Nutt. "For whatever reason, it seemed like there was a lid on the basket. We felt like we had a good chance if we could get it to overtime and it was an incredible finish."
Down, 67-57, with 4:33 left to play,
Jamaal Calvin made a three-pointer and then stole the inbounds pass on IUPUI's ensuing possession. Calvin's defensive stop led to two free throws by
Jarekious Bradley at the 3:29 mark.
After IUPUI answered with two free throws of its own,
Josh Langford scored on a layup to shrink the Jaguars lead to 69-64 at the 3:04 mark.
Shortly after his jumper cut the lead to four, Bradley drained a three-pointer to make it a one possession game (72-69) with 1:46 left.
Calvin rebounded Barksdale's missed shot and was then fouled. Calvin, however, missed two free throws that would have pulled the Redhawks to within a point.
Langford then grabbed the rebound when Ian Chiles' jumper came off the rim and Bradley quickly found McRoberts who splashed in a three from the left corner to tie the game at 72-72.
McRoberts' clutch shot sent the home crowd into a frenzy and gave Southeast new life heading into the overtime period.
"Paul was a difference-maker," said Nutt. "He gave us deflections and got some big steals. We awarded him his first game ball."
For the second-straight home game, Southeast came out of the gate sluggish.
The Redhawks missed five field goals and turned the ball over twice on their first seven possessions of the game, as IUPUI took an early 8-0 lead.
Moments after
Tyler Stone's jumper brought the game to a 15-15 deadlock with 7:23 remaining in the first half, IUPUI used another 8-0 jaunt before taking a 37-29 lead at the half.
IUPUI was up by as many as 13 points in the second half before letting its lead slip away.
Southeast outscored the Jaguars, 11-7, in the overtime period and made a perfect 7-of-7 free throws to nail down the victory. Langford and Bradley each hit two free throws in the final 15 seconds to put the win on ice.
McRoberts, also a starting wide receiver on the Southeast football team, scored the first points of his college career on his game-tying three. He also had two steals and a rebound in 15 minutes just three days after officially joining the basketball squad as a walk-on.
Bradley dropped in 27 points and had 10 rebounds to lead all scorers. He made a near-perfect 11-of-12 at the free throw line, scoring 18 of his points in the second half.
Stone turned in his second-consecutive double-double with 15 points and 15 boards, while Calvin added 11 points and a game-high three steals. Additionally, Calvin made the basket to give the Redhawks their first lead.
Southeast shot a season-low 37.3 percent (28-of-75) from the field and hit 20 free throws.
IUPUI, like Southeast, had two players with double-doubles. Barksdale led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds and Mitch Patton contributed 16 points and 13 boards. Chiles tossed in 20 points and Khufu Najee threw in 12 to round out the Jaguars double-digit scorers.
The Jaguars sunk 25-of-26 free throws for a scorching 96.2 percent. IUPUI made 23-straight free throws before Barksdale missed with 5:02 left in regulation.
Southeast returns to action when it visits in-state rival Missouri State on Dec. 29.
