Campbell’s Big Day Leads Redhawks past IPFW, 7-1

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team moved to 2-0 at home on the young season after a 7-1 win over IPFW Friday afternoon at Capaha Field. Senior Kody Campbell was 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
 
IPFW opened up the scoring in the second inning. The Mastodons loaded the bases in the frame as Christian Hull struggled to find the plate after striking out the side in the opening frame.
 
The Mastodon's scored on a walk with the bases loaded to go up 1-0. The Redhawks left handed starter Hull got out of the jam striking out the final two batters of the inning.

"Christian was impressive today, he was effective with his fastball and it was impressive to see him work himself out of the jam early and turn out a nice outing," said head coach Mark Hogan.
 
The Redhawks tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Taylor Heon opened the frame with a hit by pitch, he would then reach second on a balk by IPFW starter Charles Weaver. Redshirt freshman Andy Lennington drove him in with an RBI single to the left side.
 
Senior Kody Campbell hit a liner over the right field fence to give the Redhawks the 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, his first round tripper of the season and his third of his career.

"Kody is a veteran and Weaver left a pitch over the plate and Kody made him pay." said Hogan.
 
Sophomore Cole Bieser put the Redhawks up 3-1 after scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Campbell. Bieser ripped a double off of the base of the left field fence before scoring on the single in the fifth inning.

"It was great to see Cole get some big hits today, he is developing into a great player," said Hogan.
 
The Redhawks would later added two runs in the six and seventh inning respectively.
 
The sixth inning was highlighted by two-run double off the bat of Bieser, his second of the game as once again the sophomore ripped the ball off the base of the left field fence.
 
Southeast ended their scoring in the seventh inning with a pair of runs. Senior Jesse Tierney ripped a two-run single to right to highlight the frame.
 
Southeast outhit IPFW 12-5, the Redhawks have outhit every opponent this season.
 
Campbell paced the Redhawks with his three hit afternoon, he added his first home run since 2010. Bieser was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. The two recorded the Redhawks first three hit performance of the season.
 
Senior Trenton Moses extended his hitting streak 16 games and reached base for the 25th straight game, going 2-for-3 with a double. Redshirt freshman Andy Lennington added two hits as well.
 
The Redhawks starter Christian Hull had a solid afternoon on the hill going five innings allowing one run on three hits with a career-high eight strikeouts.
 
Senior Bobby Hurst threw an inning with two strikeouts, and Ryan Prickett threw two innings allowing a hit with two knockouts. Cody Spanberger finished the day throwing a hitless ninth with two strikeouts.

"Our bullpen was very solid today, they set the tone for the weekend," said Hogan.
 
The Redhawks and Mastodons will hook up again tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m., CT. Probable starters are Shae Simmons for Southeast and lefthander Jason Kalber for IPFW
